About Brina

Hi there! I'm Brina--I'm a sophomore history major at SUNY New Paltz. I spent a year as an ESL teacher's assistant and several as a camp counselor. I'm here for any of your writing needs: from English essays, to college applications, and papers in any subject. I have experience with poetry and playwriting, on the creative side. I look forward to meeting you and reading your work!

Being a tutor means I get to help students on their writing journeys. I believe writing, whether academic or creative, is a great way to learn more about oneself. Finding your writing voice is vital to succeeding in school, and many careers. It's also not as scary as some may think, and I love helping folks trust that they can be good writers!

As noted above, I started officially teaching in 2017. With older students, though, I've been helping my classmates write and edit their papers all through high school and college.

I hope to work as a tutor at SUNY New Paltz's Writing Center this year, to access more training and experience.

From Fall 2017 through Spring 2018, I was a kindergarten teacher's assistant. Majority of the class were recent immigrants from Russian speaking countries. The teacher did not speak Russian, so I guided these students in learning or improving their English. We slowly weened off of Russian, until the end of the year when all of our students were comfortable speaking English all the time in class.

About the lesson

I like to get to know my students a little before our first session to establish a rapport, and calm energy. I might ask you to send me a piece of writing you're proud of, or to write a short paragraph about you and your interests.

In our first session, we will look at the assignment at hand and discuss ideas on how to move forward. If you come to me with a work in progress, we'll pinpoint areas needed for improvement, which will help us make a plan for future lessons.

I have worked with students ages 4 through 11, helping with language acquisition, and general homework assitance. Many of my students have been bilingual, with English being their second language.

As someone who had a tutor in elementary school, I know it can be stressful meeting a new teacher. It's a vulnerable position, presenting something you're struggling with. I encourage you to let go of any shame you may feel about needing help. Everyone needs help sometimes, it's okay! Without openness, there is no path to improvement.

During quarantine, I have been going back and forth between my parents' apartment in Brooklyn, and my cousins' home in New Jersey. I've picked up baking and my most exciting bake so far has been a red velvet cake with raspberries and blueberries. My cousin Gene and I spent the afternoon grocery shopping, and then the whole evening baking. Preparing things for my family has been so gratifying! The best feeling is when it's so good, they're too busy eating to say anything.
