About Haley

Hello! My name is Haley Skelley and I have been a certified teacher in the state of Michigan for 11 years. Though I've spent most of my career teaching kindergarten, I have also taught high school and third grade. I have online teaching experience (prior to the COVID shutdown), and wake up early each morning to teach ESL classes to kids online. I have my Master's Degree in Literacy Education, and have a Reading Specialist certification. Recently, I received training in the Orton Gillingham program, which is a systematic phonics based program proven to help children with dyslexia.

Though I've been tutoring for several years, I recently changed my platform to tutoring on Zoom. I am able to share my screen, use digital texts, use interactive games, and use my document camera to enhance instruction. I specialize in working with elementary aged students (incoming kindergarten through fourth grade). A typical 30 minute tutoring session would be similar to a guided reading lesson- including word work, reading, phonics, and at times, guided writing. Older grades may also receive instruction in note taking, test taking skills, or paragraph writing, upon request. All lessons are individualized to student needs, and cater to what parents would like me to focus on with their child. Each week, parents will be provided with feedback and a suggestion of what they can work on at home to continue the learning.

I absolutely love teaching, especially teaching kids how to become successful readers. I enjoy seeing student's progress and when they have those "aha moments" and something clicks.

About the lesson

I would typically do a "meet and greet" with the student and parents via Zoom. Not only do I want to meet so the student is comfortable with me, I like to find out what their interests are and how they feel about reading, so I can best tailor my lessons to them. I also like to ask the parents about their expectations so that we are all on the same page.

Our first tutoring lesson might have a quick assessment or two, so I can gauge where the student is at. Then I would do a normal guided reading-type lesson, taking notes as we go so that they next lesson is focused on what that student needs to work on. I do spend a lot of time planning my lessons mindfully so that it is not only geared what the student needs to work on, it is also based on student interests.
