About Rae

I am a tutor passionate about learning and seeking to help students with essay writing/editing, AP test prep, college prep work, and various humanities courses.

As a young college grad, I still remember what it was like to struggle through high school. I often found many of my humanities and writing courses dry and exhausting. It wasn't until college that I rediscovered my love for learning and writing through young, ardent professors. I aim to share this excitement with students in middle school, high school, and their freshman year of college. I hope to make learning fun again and provide encouragement to struggling students! I am laid back, patient, and prefer to focus on a student's individual improvement rather than stressing them out with comparisons and grades. My goal is to help students find strategies that help them read, write, and comprehend to their highest potential so they can move forward with renewed confidence. I understand that each student is an individual with their own struggles and learning styles. I am prepared to approach them as such to encourage a healthier learning mindset.

I graduated from my undergraduate program in psychology and criminal justice with a 3.96 overall GPA and a 4.138 upper-level course GPA. I was also a member of my university's honors college and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. My majors required extensive amounts of reading and writing in both technical and humanities-based works. It also required multiple reading and writing-based literature and history courses.

As a result, I am proficient in expository/persuasive essays, technical essays (such as research propositions or research articles), creative writing, reading complex literature and educational works, and more. I also offer services for proofreading, test prep for AP literature and AP psychology, practical application tutoring for psychology and criminal justice/law enforcement basics/criminal law basics courses, SAT/ACT essay prep, college applications, and college/honors admission essays.

Throughout high school and college, I helped many of my peers with writing and test prep. Each of them came out with a better understanding of the foundations of writing and the concepts we reviewed for their tests. I helped multiple students in their applications and essays for both college and honors programs. Each student I counseled experienced lowered anxiety over their applications and all were accepted.

In addition, I have experience working with teens struggling with ADHD and mid-to-high functioning autism (or Aspergers).

When I was in high school, some of my friends were struggling in our essay-based advanced history course. I realized that some students in my class struggled with grammar, vocabulary, and the foundations of essay writing. I began helping a few of my friends learn how to write outlines and turn them into comprehensive essays. Before long, several other classmates were approaching me for proofreading and essay tutoring.

During the summers of my college career, I helped many students I had met during my time as a childcare worker with their first college and honors applications, essays, and resumes. It was an incredible experience helping teens who I had previously nannied (or nannied the siblings of) take those first steps toward adulthood and higher education.

While in college, I participated in several small study groups for classes both in my area of study and my general education courses. This led to one-on-one tutoring and test prep with several classmates throughout my college career. Students often found my approach to be more comprehensive and clear-cut than those of the graduate students who ran the free university tutoring services.

I learned that having a tutor who makes you feel heard and helps encourage you can help relieve stress and revive your excitement for learning!

I received a BA in psychology and criminal justice at the University of Alabama. Graduation stats:

About the lesson

Before my first meeting with a new student, I usually review some of their previous work in the area we will be working on. For example, if they need help with essays on a particular subject, I would like to read one of their previous ones to get a sense of what their strengths and weaknesses are. If the student is struggling with a course, I will look over some of their recent assignments to gather where their pain points of the subject are.

During our first meeting, I like to sit down with the student and have a conversation about what they feel their strengths and weaknesses are, where they feel a lack of confidence, what they enjoy about the subject, how they normally study, and what has previously worked. I also like having a similar discussion with the parents if applicable.

I then like to walk through a practice scenario with them. Depending on what I am being hired for, this could be a practice test, practice essay prompt, or having them read a sample piece followed by a short comprehension assessment.

This process helps me gather information on the student to help build an individualized game plan to get them to where they want to be.

I have worked with students ranging from 6th grade to sophomores in college. I also have experience working with students struggling with ADHD and mid-to-high functioning autism (or Aspergers).

You should be looking for a tutor who makes you feel comfortable asking questions and being curious. The last thing I want is for you to feel judged or held back from expanding your learning experience. Communication is key to crafting a healthy and effective approach to your education!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should consider what makes them the most comfortable in a learning environment and what learning techniques and styles have worked for them in the past. My primary goal is to help students by understanding who they are and how they learn. They cannot learn if they are uncomfortable in the learning environment or if they feel the approach is forced.

Students should ask themselves what they want to get out of our sessions. Simply expecting to "get better at writing" is usually not helpful. The more specific your goals, the easier it will be for us to do the targeted work necessary to increase your confidence and improve your work. Having specific goals also allows for noticeable milestones to increase morale.

Students should also ask themselves why they are doing this. Are you trying to raise your grades so you can play on the sports team? Are you trying to get into your dream college or into a program for your dream career? What is YOUR "why"? Not your parents' or your teachers'. This "why" will help you push through when your motivation is low. Eyes on the prize!

Lastly, they should ask themselves if they are ready to get help. If something makes them feel hesitant, nervous, or ashamed, I want to work through that with them. No one should feel like they cannot ask for help openly. Such negative feelings only become a distraction and barrier.

First session $35 /hour for essay brainstorming, outlining, and crafting; Second session $25 /hour for essay editing, vocabulary enhancement, and reworking.
