About Jill

I love getting to know you and helping you succeed and care about a subject that feels too hard. I tutor because there is nothing more helpful to understanding a subject than one-on-one tutoring. I can help you with everything from reading comprehension to study skills to math.

I've been a tutor for over twenty years. I started out with peer tutoring in math as a high school student, which let me save up for a car. I had a tutor myself who helped me understand math, and I wanted to share that gift that he gave me with other students. I'll never forget him!

My Ed.D. is in Instructional Leadership, which means I have LOADS of strategies for helping a wide variety of learning styles. I'm an experienced middle school teacher with certification in English Language Arts and Social Studies. I also have reading and gifted endorsement. My students in Civics got the highest scores in the state of Florida in 2018-2019. I've also been the recipient of multiple grants for enrichment projects for students and two educational leadership awards.

I created curriculum that is an extension of my musical theater hobby. I am a playwright and musical theater lyricist, so I put hard subject matter into scripts that rhyme to make it easier to understand and more fun. You can see it all at readrhymerepeat.com. My first teaching job was during summers in college as an assistant teacher for summer camps. I have a passion for working with gifted students, so later I became certified in this area and started my first full-time teaching job in 2006 at a middle school. Because of my advanced degree, I have also gotten to teach adults in college and university. I come from a family of teachers, so it was natural for me to start teaching.

My first tutoring job came after a tutor I loved helped me learn geometry in high school. Because of my work with him, I was then able to tutor other high school students and gained a passion for one-on-one tutoring.

I have tutored for over 20 years and worked as a middle school and college instructor. I have an Ed.D. in Instructional Leadership, which means I am ready with LOADS of instructional strategies to help multiple learning styles. My certifications are through the Florida Department of Education for English Language Arts grades 6-12, Social Studies grades 5-9, Gifted Endorsement K-12, and Reading Endorsement K-12.

About the lesson

I ask the student his/her goals, get to know them, and find out whether I can help with materials they already have, such as homework, or whether I can create custom materials that match their goals.

I have worked with all levels of students, from struggling readers to students in the gifted program. I have mostly worked with middle school students in gifted classes, but have tutored most every level and ability from preschool to adult since 1990.

If you are looking to hire a teacher to help with K-8 math, K-12 reading comprehension, K-12 writing, or K-12 study skills, or K-12 enrichment, ask the person you want to work with to share multiple strategies they would use to help you if you didn't understand the first, second, or even third time.

I am fond of teaching alternative methods of reading comprehension. I created curriculum for interactive reading, and it was fun to help students who were struggling with the content. The material helped middle school students improve their reading comprehension using rhyme. I loved hearing them read aloud together and interact with one another.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Think through what materials you already have tried and share that with the teacher so that they can review with you one-on-one or create new materials that better suit your learning styles. Also be specific about your goals and timeline for completing work and studying both with and without your tutor.
