About Michael

Experience and patience. I think the biggest issue is that people are judgemental. I pride myself on being understanding. If you have a question, I'm willing to take you seriously and give my all to help you out.

I enjoy helping people. My favorite thing about the work is boosting a student's confidence--taking the time to let them know that people all over are struggling, we all just need a little help and understanding sometimes. I like to see that after working with me, the student has a better grip on what was confusing them--that's what boosts their confidence--the ah-ha moment.

I've always wanted to teach. When my daughter was born (children are expensive) I decided teaching would be a good way to make extra money and helping people out is always fulfilling work.

Michael Hammerle is pursuing his MFA at Bennington College. He holds a BA in English, cum laude, from the University of Florida. His fiction has been published in The Best Small Fictions 2017 selected by Amy Hempel. His prose and poetry has been published in, or forthcoming from, New World Writing, Chicago Literati, After the Pause, the Sandy River Review, the Matador Review and many more magazines. He lives and writes in Gainesville, FL.

About the lesson

For new students, I like to work at their pace. Growing up, one of my biggest issues with learning was feeling pressured. I never want to pressure a student. I want for a student to feel comfortable and know that all questions are good questions; everyone, no matter your age, needs a little help sometimes. I give my students the space, and understanding, that they need to learn.

I've worked with all kinds of people. I've worked in ESOL as well. So, I feel comfortable working with at any level of proficiency.

Make sure they have the credentials. Plenty of teachers come out every year with a crisp diploma. There's so much that can be done with an english degree. If they haven't done anything with their degree then they aren't going to be able to bring the go-getter, confident attitude.

I'm from Gainesville, Florida. The home of the Gators. It was close to my fiance's due date we were expecting her to go into labor anytime. She was very pregnant and jumping on the couch as the Gators were fighting off a good Kentucky football team. They are one of our many bitter rivals. It looked like Kentucky had a chance to beat us but we pulled of the W. That night my fiance's contractions were kicking into high gear (most likely from all the excitement) and my daughter was born the next night. Most women around that time have to induce their labor walking, etc. But not us. All we needed was a classic Saturday Down South.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Don't over think it. Every question is a good question. I mean this. Einstein said something along the lines of, "Don't judge a gold fish but it's ability to climb a tree." That's how I feel. Everyone is good at something. Don't let a single short coming get you down. Get some help and that knowledge will go a long way for you.
