About Roman
Hey there! My name is Roman. I am an audio engineer, music producer, and performing musician working in the Detroit metro area. My specialty is electronic music, but I have performed and worked on many different styles of music including jazz, funk, metal, rock, and large ensemble. My company Mastiph Media provides audio engineering services and also training on various aspects of the music making and performing process.
My music journey began with starting piano lessons when I was around 7 or 8, and upon entering middle school, I started studying percussion and keyboards. Drums and percussion quickly became my main instrument as I found quite a natural affinity to rhythm instruments. In 7th grade, my first band performed a green day cover for our talent show. The next year we played a more challenging cover of a system of a down tune, and in highschool we started performing outside of the school at venues around town. In our school band, my role was typically as the lead percussionist. I loved the challenge of more difficult music, and also helping mentor my fellow percussionists.
In my later years of highschool, beat producing became my main focus. While visiting my grandparents one afternoon, I found the program GarageBand on their computer. I had never really experimented with a music making program, my experience with computers had just been for games or listening to music. So this was mind blowing to me, and I spent the rest of the afternoon working on my first song (sorry grandma!). I never exported or saved it, but the fire in my imagination was lit. Years later, I have moved on thru multiple music production programs before finally deciding on Ableton. It's intuitive design and extensive adaptability make it a powerful tool in the studio and on stage. 7 years later, Ableton is now like another language to me. My workflow has become as effortless as it is efficient. Because of this, my studio has become a hub for many music makers and artists. When they are in town for shows, they make a point to come through. Sometimes to learn, and sometimes just to create something new.
After highschool I attended Grand Rapids Community College for a few years studying music theory, piano, percussion, and recording technologies. Toward the end of my time there, my performing schedule started picking up a bit more and I ended up moving from Grand Rapids to the Detroit metro area to be closer to a bigger pool of venues and artists.
My love for music making, performance, and teaching has led me on all over the country. These days I perform regularly with my band "Pause." at venues and festivals all across the Midwest. I also work as an audio engineer at the production company Precision Event Technologies.
My first experiences mentoring my peers were in highschool as the drumlins section leader. I would help the other students in my class learn their parts and better techiques for playing. After highschool I taught percussion lessons for a few years. I have been teaching audio engineering and music production for the past 3 or 4 years.

With every new student, I always offer a free first session. The first session will mostly be an orientation. I would like to get an accurate understanding of the students experience and existing knowledge. Also, at the orientation we would ideally set forth some goals to acheive through the lessons and a timeframe by which we would like to reach these.
I have taught as young as middle school students all the way up to adults.
I would advise the student to look at the record this teacher has with the subject matter. If you are hiring an audio engineering teacher, listen to some of their mixes and recordings. If you are hiring an Ableton teacher, listen to some of their songs or performances. This will give you a good idea if they are the type of influence you want on your learning process.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
You should be thinking about two things: What drew you into this discipline? And what are you trying to acheive through these lessons?
The first question is important, we all have little breakthrough moments where our curiosity is ignited and a passion forms. There will be times when you feel discouraged or tired from learning any skill or technique, remembering what got you into this in the first place can be very centering and put your mind back in a better place. Also, knowing what got you into this will help your instructor cater your lessons more to your personal learning style and tastes.
The second question is a more practical one. Think about the things you want to be able to do that you can't do now. These should be visualized and vocalized as your goals and milestones for your learning. Sharing these things with your instructor helps them get better insight into your vision and help keep track of your progression as a student.
