About Avi
I focus on real applications and teach the ability to describe real systems in terms of their conceptual counterparts. I also help people make games that utilize their new skills, so not only do they learn the subjects, but they end up with something cool to show for it and remember the lessons by.
I love inspiring interest in the topics I teach. I emphasize the things you can do and make with these subjects, and I particularly like to show how they apply to (and with) games. It is so satisfying to me to see my students' faces light up when I show them how highly conceptual subjects like programming and calculus are applied to the real world all the time!
I love explaining complexities of topics that interest me, and I started out by helping my friends through their algorithms and data structures homework. They said I was good at it, so I started teaching others too!
I have a Bachelor's degree in Computer Game Science, which is a mixture of game design and computer science disciplines, and I have been a private tutor for fellow students during college. The true asset that I value in teaching is my ability to explain things clearly and at many different levels of detail, and to do so in a structure that fits all of the parts into a whole.

Step one is to work with the student to figure out what level of understanding they have with the subject. Then I work with them through several teaching methods to find the one (or combination) that is most effective; everyone has a different way of understanding things. Some like to start at the conceptual level, others like details early, and some need practical applications to get started, for instance. After that, I work through the subject with them and try to inspire interest as well as impart understanding - everyone learns best when they are interested themselves.
Mostly college students in computer science, but also college students of other disciplines and high school students.

Details
$50/hr with a one hour minimum. For students that have a hard time concentrating or just need a break I usually put in an extra 5-10 minutes per hour time for that, unbilled.
