About Megan

I’m a software developer with a background in the sciences and a passion for entomology (the study of insects). When I was in high school, I started tutoring college students in chemistry, and I have since taught subjects ranging from insect physiology to web development fundamentals. My goal is to help others succeed in their quest for knowledge and develop a passion for learning.

I’m very passionate about the subjects I teach, and I love sharing that passion with others through learning. My favorite part of tutoring is when my students reach that “Ah ha!” moment – seeing them succeed is extremely rewarding! I do everything I can so that each of my students achieves their goals and experiences many “Ah ha!” moments. :)

I have a degree in entomology, and I’ve always enjoyed subjects that involve science (biology, ecology, chemistry, etc.). I graduated from Purdue University with Highest Distinction, interned at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History, and got involved in the Young Entomologists Group (of which I am still a part!). I’ve since pivoted from a career in entomology to one in software development, where I enjoy all-things coding.

I love sharing my passion for and knowledge of the sciences with others, whether I teach something new or help someone understand a concept with which they are struggling to grasp. In high school, I took science classes at our local community college, and I tutored my lab partners (who were much older than I was!) when they struggled to understand concepts from the lectures and textbook readings. In college, I led study groups for several classes (mostly entomology/science related), helping my classmates prepare for midterms and finals. Lastly, during my job hunt after graduating a coding bootcamp, I tutored students in web development fundamentals (HTML, CSS, and JavaScript).

About the lesson

Most of my experience has involved working with college and bootcamp students, although I have worked with kids (and still do!) in the Young Entomologists Group. My work there involves mentoring kids of all ages in entomology, and I lead field trips on catching and identifying insects as well as facilitate workshops on insect collection preparation.
