About Rob

I pride myself on being able to relate to people excited about improving themselves academically and as individuals. Often in grade school, high school, and college, we are asked to balance academics with various extracurriculars (sports, music, volunteering, etc.); having maintained a high academic standard while participating in the year-long commitment to NCAA Division III running each year, I feel as though I can provide a holistic prospective of balance, dedication, and determination that is needed to succeed today's world.

The moment a concept or idea solidifies and "clicks" for a student. At a personal level, I get joy from seeing people understand the subject matter that I have dedicated my academic career to. I'm excited about sharing my prospective and understanding to others.

My grandfather was a professor of microbiology and bio-ethics at Skidmore College (New York) for many years, and has greatly facilitated my interested in both the subject matter of biology and teaching itself. Having been blessed with many fantastic teachers and professors during my high school and college years, I have developed an appreciation and a love for spreading knowledge. I firmly believe that teachers and professors have the ability to light the fire that pushes students to strive further.

Upon graduating from a Colby College, a small liberal arts school in Maine this past spring, I worked as a teaching assistant as well as a biology tutor from my sophomore year to my senior year. In addition to studying biochemistry and molecular biology during my time in college, I was a member of the men's cross country team, competing at the NCAA DIII championships this past November, as well as a four-year member of the men's varsity indoor and outdoor track & field programs. I was elected to the cross country/track leadership council my junior and senior years and have provided guidance to many of the younger members of the team (on the track and in the classroom).

In addition to my time in the classroom and on the track, I worked as a research assistant for my college during the summer of '18 (until graduation), performing experiments on a social amoeba (Dictyostelium discoideum) and various strains of its endosymbiotic bacteria. During the following school year, I taught many of the techniques I learned during the summer to new members of the lab.

During the summer of '19, I worked at the Columbia Irving Medical Center in New York City as a clinical microbiology intern. During my summer in New York, I shadowed infectious disease and microbiology specialists around the hospital, and performed hands-on research regarding improved methods of diagnosing Burkholderia infections. Although COVID-19 has delayed some of the progress on the project, the research I conducted with the principal investigator is in the process of being published.

Upon graduation, I accepted an offer to work researching and modeling infectious diseases and biological agents at a firm just outside of Washington, DC.

In my mind, it is critical to know what motivates a student and what that student is interested in. Teaching is not a linear, "cookie-cutter" process; different aspects of learning make different students "tick". Approaching a new student is analogous to detective work: finding out that "thing" that makes a student hungry for knowledge is key.

Additionally, being relatable is imperative. Providing real-world examples that stem from mutually-shared interests can greatly enhance learning productivity.

Most of the students I have worked with have been college students, however, I feel confident working with students at any level.

Look for a teacher that is relatable. The best learning experiences I have had have been with professors who share similar values and interests with me. My biochemistry professor was an avid runner-- we got along very well. Sharing interests can also make providing examples much more straightforward, therefore enhancing learning.

Just earlier this week I received a personalized video from one of my senior-year college professors. This professor prepared personalized videos for every graduating biology major at the college! It is actions like these that make me proud and incredibly appreciative of teachers.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What are your personal goals? What to you want to achieve? What is something, a concept or a learning style, that you struggle with? How can I help you the most?
