About Cassandra
I've been a freelancing bassoonist since 1999 and teaching regularly for over a decade. My students range in age from 5th grade through adult and receive individualized instruction in tone production, musicality, technique, and music theory in every lesson. I hold a Masters degree in Bassoon Performance from the University of Arizona and play in just about every kind of permutation you could think of for bassoon. I teach privately, as well as coach ensembles and am continuously searching out opportunities for my students to succeed and grow. Not every student will become a professional bassoonist, but every student should leave me with a lifelong love of music and skills they can enjoy in all other aspects of their lives.
The career aptitude test I took in high school said I should do something different every day. Freelancing as a bassoonist affords me just this opportunity, as does teaching. Every gig is different, just as every student is different and requires a specialized approach to help each of them unlock their potential. I LOVE a challenge!
I started in earnest with three students handed off to me from a departing colleague. These students grew into three more, and so forth, until now when I'm up in double digits. Before that, I had taught one or two and usually nearing the ends of their high school careers. It's the kind of thing one grows into over time - finding an approach that works for both your students and yourself that feels comfortable and productive.
I have both Bachelors and Masters degrees in Bassoon Performance, as well as having spent a number of years as a Teaching Artist in the public school system working with large numbers of diverse children and learning about lesson planning and scaffolding concepts. I love kids, especially adolescents with all their awkward struggles, and have two of my own that make me proud every day. Breaking concepts down into digestible chunks is a fun exercise and no day is better than the ones when the lightbulb blinks on over a student's head.

I like to find out why they've chosen bassoon. It's a weird, awkward, and stunningly beautiful instrument. It takes a special breed of human being to want to tackle this particular beast and I like knowing exactly what drew them to it. We then jump into how to make a sound, reeds, care and assembly of the instrument, and plunge into playing!
I've worked with students as young as 5th graders, all the way up through adults returning to bassoon after a long absence. It's a wide age-range and each group has it's own set of challenges.
The biggest question is sometimes, "Is this student ready to tackle this particular playing issue, or should I wait? Will they be able to fix it now, or will it plague them for the next X months and ruin bassoon-playing for all time?"
Find a teacher whose style and methods suit your needs. Not every teacher will be a great fit and your teacher can make all the difference in your experience with your instrument.
On two separate "field trips" over the last few years, my students have had the opportunity to meet very accomplished bassoonists from around the world. In both cases, their questions were insightful and filled with excitement about the bassoon and I was proud to see them interacting with these other professionals with such candor and optimism.

Details
I charge $40/lesson. That lesson lasts anywhere from 45-60 minutes, depending on attention span of the student, and I provide reeds at a large discount to my students.
Once the student has established themselves as a responsible reed caretaker, I have been known to provide reeds at no cost to the student.
