About Shey
I began teaching my Freshman year of college when I volunteered for a tutoring program for middle schools students in Philadelphia. I immediately found the experience to incredily rewarding and have been tutoring ever since.
I have received training sessions from Big Brothers Big Sisters NYC and Rays of Sunshine (a tutoring program in Philadelphia) for working with minors as a mentor and tutor.

I will begin by developing an understanding of the student's goals along with any challenges they may be facing in achieving these goals. From there, we can put together a study plan that works with the student's schedule and adapt the plan as we see fit.
I have worked with middle and high school students in general subjects along with high school entrance exam prep. I have experience working with students who have learning disabilities as well as ESL students.
I would advise them to look for a teacher that that feel is a good match for their learning styles. It can be difficult for students to articulate what areas they are having trouble understanding. Having a tutor who they feel comfortable speaking with can provide students with some confidence to explain those roadblocks.
A student accidentally pasted a meme into a document we were working on, and we were able to share a laugh over it. Learning new material can sometimes be a frustrating experience and this allowed us to take a moment to relax. While my top priority is helping students reach their academic goals, I think it is important to develop a strong relationship built on trust and sometimes laughter too.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I would reccomend that students think through their all of their questions before asking for help to give themselves an opportunity to work it out on their own. But I also fully understand the importance of helping students think out loud and working through examples together.

Shey was very patient and worked with me to make a study plan to prepare for my Regents exam. He is good at explaining questions in different ways to make sure that I understood how to solve them. I ended up scoring very well and will continue tutoring with him in the Fall.
