About Ato
I have taught and tutored Maths for more than 20 years and currently work as an Assistant Headteacher. I have led Mathematics departments for over eight years, previously served as an Assistant Principal and am an experienced Edexcel A Level Mathematics examiner. I teach GCSE, A Level and Further Mathematics, quickly identifying gaps in understanding and explaining difficult ideas clearly and systematically. My lessons are supportive but challenging, helping students build confidence, independence and strong exam technique. As an examiner, I understand where students commonly lose marks and how to improve their solutions. Former A Level students have progressed to study Medicine, Dentistry and Engineering at UCL, King’s College London and the University of Bristol. I hold a degree in Chemical Engineering, a master’s degree from the University of Warwick and qualified teacher status.

I offer one-to-one tuition and small-group lessons for GCSE, A Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics. One-to-one lessons are tailored to the student. I identify gaps in their knowledge, establish what is holding them back and focus each lesson on their individual needs and goals. My small-group lessons follow a proven, carefully sequenced curriculum that I have refined over many years to deliver the best outcomes. Students benefit from clear explanations, worked examples, regular practice and focused exam preparation. I break difficult ideas into simple steps and show students how to present their solutions clearly and avoid common mistakes. Lessons are taught online using Zoom and an interactive whiteboard, with work set between sessions where appropriate.

Ato has grown to be a father figure in my life, from first teaching me when I was 8 till I was 18. His endless compassion, patience and guidance has doubtlessly shaped my life, not only educationally but, personally.
I really, really disliked Maths. I had a bad experience with my school teacher, was predicted a grade 5 for my GCSE. With Ato, I achieved a Grade 7 and loved it so much I ended up taking A-Level maths and got an A! It really is true when they say how much you like Maths depends on your teacher. He is thorough, articulate and incredibly proficient in what he does. So forever grateful for him, and wouldn’t be able to stress a recommendation for his services enough.I can honestly say that Ato has provided, without a doubt, the best teaching I have ever experienced. I have never met a teacher who demonstrates such genuine dedication to his students or who puts so much thought, time and care into making sure they truly understand what they are learning. What makes Ato’s teaching so exceptional is that he understands that every student learns differently. He never takes a one-size-fits-all approach. He has an incredible abundance of resources and is always willing to adapt his teaching, try different explanations and find new ways to engage you until something genuinely clicks. He makes learning feel accessible rather than intimidating. His teaching is also incredibly thorough. He never cuts corners or simply teaches you a method to get the right answer. Instead, he takes the time to explain the underlying concepts properly, building a strong foundation and genuine understanding. This meant that I wasn't just learning how to answer questions for an exam; I was developing an understanding of mathematics that has continued to benefit me long after finishing A-levels.His patience is another quality I cannot praise highly enough. He never made me feel stupid or embarrassed for not knowing something. In fact, he encouraged me to be honest when I didn't understand, because he created such a supportive environment where not knowing something was simply part of the learning process. This made me completely comfortable asking questions and admitting when I was struggling. He is also incredibly kind, understanding and accommodating. He recognises that students have lives outside of education and that there can be many things affecting someone's wellbeing, concentration and ability to learn. His empathy is something I have found incredibly rare in teachers. He has always been supportive and flexible with scheduling, while still maintaining an extremely high standard of teaching. The impact Ato’s teaching has had on my own academic journey has been enormous. I went from being in one of the lowest sets at school and genuinely struggling with basic mathematics, including fractions, to achieving an A in A-level Mathematics, narrowly missing an A*. What makes this even more meaningful is that the strong understanding he helped me develop went far beyond simply what was required for the syllabus. I am now studying Chemical Physics at university, and that foundation has continued to pay off. I am currently achieving over 90% in my university mathematics modules. I genuinely believe that the depth of understanding I developed through Ato’s teaching played a huge role in making this possible. But beyond the results, what I remember most fondly is how much I actually enjoyed learning with him. I always looked forward to our lessons because they were genuinely fun and engaging. His warm and positive energy made me feel completely comfortable and at ease, and I would consistently finish lessons with a real sense of accomplishment. That was something I often struggled to experience in normal school lessons, where I could leave feeling confused, behind or afraid to ask for help.
Looking back, I genuinely miss those lessons. It is quite rare to find a teacher who can make you want to learn, while simultaneously giving you the confidence to tackle things you once thought you couldn't do.
I would recommend Ato wholeheartedly to anyone looking for a tutor. Whether you are struggling with the basics, preparing for an important exam, or simply want to develop a much deeper understanding of your subject, I cannot recommend him highly enough. His patience, dedication, adaptability and ability to explain concepts thoroughly make him an exceptional teacher, but what truly sets him apart is how much he cares about his students and their individual progress. He didn't just help me achieve better grades — he completely changed my confidence and ability as a mathematician. I will always be incredibly grateful for that.Ato was my maths tutor throughout my GCSEs and A-levels, and I genuinely couldn’t recommend him more highly. He is an incredibly enthusiastic, entertaining and dedicated tutor who goes far beyond simply teaching maths. He also supported me throughout the university application process and consistently motivated me to aim higher and become the best student I could be.
Thanks to his teaching and guidance, I achieved Grade 9s in both Maths and Further Maths at GCSE and an A in A-level Maths. Ato never places limitations on what his students can achieve. He always encourages you to challenge yourself, build confidence and reach your full potential. His lessons are engaging, enjoyable and full of useful strategies and examiner insights that make a real difference to your understanding and performance.
One experience that particularly stands out was when I struggled to understand mapping graphs. Ato dedicated an entire lesson to helping me understand the topic, using models and different explanations until it finally clicked. His patience and willingness to adapt his teaching to suit the student are what make him such an effective tutor.
I recommend Ato because he is genuinely the best tutor I have ever had. He makes learning maths enjoyable rather than a chore, helps you stay consistent and gives you the confidence to improve. If you are looking for a tutor who is knowledgeable, motivating, supportive and truly invested in your success, Ato is the person I would recommend.I started maths lessons with Mr. Hammond in Year 9. At that time, I had no confidence in my maths. Throughout the course of 3 years, he helped me to get my maths grades up, allowing me to attend sixth form with my desired subjects. Currently, I'm moving on to further things like university.
A few months ago, Ato was tutoring us on GCSE maths and I have learned a lot because of him. He explains concepts very clearly and will always make sure that you understand something if you are confused. He also gives us efficient methods for solving certain problems so that we can do them with less difficulty. I would definitely recommend!
Ato began teaching me in my year 10 summer after I got a 5 in my maths mock and hated anything to do with maths. In a short time, he helped me improve both academically (achieving an 8 in my year 11 mocks and a 9 in my final gcse exam) but also my mindset regarding learning. He was very patient and incredibly understanding when I struggled with anything, going over the same problems again and again until i understood fully. He is incredibly passionate about his career and it shows in the way he interacts with his students.
Helped me get 9s in maths and Further maths , and now I have a much better understanding of maths. Amazing teacher
