About Ibrahim

I am an Ancient History graduate from King’s College London and currently work in banking. Although my professional career has taken me into a different field from what I studied at university, I have always maintained a strong passion for History, Classics and the wider Humanities.

I decided to tutor because I genuinely enjoy helping other people understand subjects that I find fascinating. I also know from my own experience that academic success is not simply about knowing the information, it's about knowing how to approach a question, analyse evidence, structure an argument and communicate your ideas effectively. These are skills that can make a significant difference to a student's confidence and results.

During my time at KCL, I developed extensive experience in historical research, critical thinking, essay writing and analysing both primary and secondary sources. I was also awarded the H. H. Scullard Prize for my final-year dissertation, recognising the highest-ranking final-year dissertation across the relevant departments.

Since graduating, I have moved into a career in banking, where I continue to use many of the skills I developed through my degree, particularly analytical thinking, problem-solving, attention to detail and communicating complex information clearly. I think this combination of academic and professional experience allows me to offer students a perspective that goes beyond simply teaching the content of a subject.

As a tutor, I want to be friendly, patient and approachable, while still encouraging students to challenge themselves and reach their potential. Whether a student needs help understanding a difficult topic, preparing for an examination, improving their essay writing or simply becoming more confident in their abilities, I want to provide the guidance and support that helps them make genuine progress.

Most importantly, I want students to leave my lessons not only knowing more, but feeling that they understand the subject better and know how to approach their work independently.

About the lesson

My Approach to Tutoring

I am a graduate of King’s College London (KCL) with a degree in Ancient History, and I am passionate about helping students develop both their knowledge and their confidence in History and related Humanities subjects.

My approach is centred around personalised, one-to-one teaching. Every student has different strengths, weaknesses and goals, so I do not believe in using exactly the same approach for everyone. I first aim to understand what the student is struggling with and what they want to achieve, before adapting lessons accordingly.

Rather than simply asking students to memorise large amounts of information, I focus on helping them understand why something is important and how to use their knowledge effectively. In History and Humanities subjects, this means developing skills such as analysing evidence, evaluating different interpretations, constructing convincing arguments and explaining ideas clearly.

I can also provide substantial support with essay writing and academic technique. This can include understanding essay questions, planning an argument, structuring paragraphs, selecting and analysing evidence, using sources effectively and developing a clear line of argument. For students aiming for the highest grades, I can help them understand what separates a competent answer from a genuinely excellent one.

For examination students, lessons can be adapted towards revision, exam technique and practice questions, including identifying weaknesses in existing answers and working on how to improve them.

Typical Lesson

My standard lesson is one hour, providing enough time to cover a topic properly while maintaining a focused and productive session. I am also happy to adapt the length and structure of lessons depending on the student's age, subject and individual requirements.

A typical lesson might involve:

Reviewing previous work and identifying areas that need improvement
Explaining difficult concepts or topics in a clear and accessible way
Working through historical evidence, sources or interpretations
Discussing questions and developing analytical thinking
Practising essay plans or examination questions
Reviewing written work and identifying specific ways to improve it
Setting clear goals for the next lesson

I want students to leave each lesson understanding not only what they have learned, but also how to apply it independently.

My Qualifications and Experience

I studied Ancient History at King's College London, developing extensive experience in historical research, critical analysis, primary and secondary source evaluation, essay writing and constructing sustained academic arguments.

During my degree, I achieved a high level of academic performance and was awarded the H. H. Scullard Prize for my final-year dissertation. The prize recognises the highest-ranking final-year dissertation across the relevant Classics and Theology/Religious Studies departments and is named after the renowned ancient historian and classical scholar H. H. Scullard.

My university experience has therefore given me a particularly strong foundation in History and the Humanities, as well as in the academic skills required to perform well at school and university level.

I aim to combine this academic background with a friendly and supportive teaching style. I understand that students can sometimes find History and essay-based subjects difficult not because they lack ability, but because they have not yet been shown an effective way of approaching the material or answering questions.

My aim is ultimately to make students more confident, more independent and better equipped to succeed academically. Whether a student needs help understanding a difficult topic, preparing for an upcoming examination or taking their essay writing to the next level, I will tailor the lessons around their individual needs and goals.
