About Carmen

Bonjour! I’m Carmen, a French tutor from the UK. I learnt French through living in France, which helped me gain a deep, native-like understanding of the language. Having experienced firsthand what it's like to learn a new language, I truly understand the challenges students face. I’m passionate about travelling and connecting with different cultures, which is why I believe learning languages remains so valuable in the 2020s. Outside of teaching, you’ll often find me exploring nature or immersed in my interests: music, film, history, and art.

I hold a bachelor’s degree in European Languages and Cultures (French) from the University of Groningen, and I’m CELTA-certified (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) through Cambridge. I’ve also passed an enhanced DBS check in the UK, meaning I’ve undergone a full background check with no convictions. With over 5 years of teaching experience, I work with students of all levels.

I’ve taught complete beginners, including young children and refugees, as well as advanced learners like high school students preparing for exams and university students improving their academic French.

I’m personable and friendly, and one of my greatest strengths as a tutor is building my students' confidence to use the language. My teaching style is fun, challenging, nurturing and encouraging, and I adapt to your individual needs. Whether you want to improve your pronunciation, writing, reading, listening, or conversational skills, I’m here to support you. In our first lesson, we’ll get to know each other and discuss your goals, interests, as well as gauge your level with my intro lesson.

About the lesson

I believe the key to learning a language is making it interesting, and immersing yourself in the many cultures of a language and the general attitude of it, it's history etc. Because of this, I focus on using authentic materials to create an immersive learning experience incorporating the goals of my students.

My lessons are tailored to my student's specific goals, whether they’re a complete beginner, preparing for exams, or looking to improve their conversational, writing, or listening skills. I adapt to my students needs in an encouraging environment to build confidence.

Lessons typically last 60 minutes, and I work with students of all ages, from young children to adults. Whether you need help with academic French, casual conversation, or anything in between, I’m here to support you.
