About Eleanor

I am an experienced teacher and tutor with a strong passion for helping students discover what they are capable of. I graduated from the University of Exeter with a BA and MA in Classics and completed my PGCE at the University of Cambridge. I have three years of teaching experience, alongside previous experience as a teaching assistant and private tutor.

What I enjoyed most about teaching was providing one-to-one clinics and seeing students steadily, and often much more quickly, improve when they received focused support tailored to their individual needs. One of the most rewarding moments was seeing that point where something finally clicked for a student — when a concept or a skill that had previously seemed difficult suddenly became clear and they realised they were capable of doing it themselves.

I believe strongly in academic rigour and encouraging every student to reach their full potential. At the same time, I recognise that students learn most effectively when they receive personalised feedback that identifies exactly what they are doing well and, importantly, what they can do to improve. I therefore make detailed, constructive feedback an important part of my teaching.

I also believe that regular exam practice is essential. Understanding the content is only part of succeeding in an examination; students need to become confident applying their knowledge under exam conditions and learn how to structure precise, well-developed answers. I combine teaching and discussion with guided practice, targeted questioning and exam-style tasks so that students can build both their knowledge and their confidence.

I enjoy teaching because it is incredibly rewarding to see students develop not only academically but also in their confidence and independence. My aim is to provide supportive, challenging and personalised tuition that helps each student make meaningful progress and achieve their full potential.

About the lesson

My Ancient Greek lessons are tailored to the student's goals and current level. Whether a student is beginning the language from scratch, consolidating their grammatical knowledge or preparing for an examination, I can create a structured programme of study around their individual needs.

For language learning, I combine a traditional grammar-and-translation approach with the accessibility and enjoyment of reading-based courses similar to the Cambridge Latin course through the combined resources of textbooks such as 'Greek Stories: A GCSE reader' and my own custom story resources. I believe students need a strong understanding of the fundamental structures of the language — including grammar, vocabulary and syntax — but that this knowledge is best developed when students have plenty of opportunities to put it into practice through reading and also through the enjoyment of the culture and history the language is so imtimately tied to.

Lessons therefore combine explanation and consolidation of grammar with translation, reading practice and regular questioning. I provide detailed feedback and plenty of opportunities to practise, helping students become increasingly confident and independent when approaching Greek texts.

For students studying Classical Greek literature, lessons can focus on both understanding the prescribed text and developing sophisticated analysis. We can read passages together, explore their language and meaning, and discuss the nuances of the text through targeted questioning designed to encourage students to develop their own interpretations and arguments. Then either once the student has a firm understanding of the text or if the student wishes to focus on dedicated exam practice then I also provided guided planning and plenty of exam practice questions with personalised feedback to aid the student in developing the nuance of their analysis and refining essay writing technique according to OCR specification.

Whether the aim is to learn Ancient Greek from scratch, strengthen weaker areas or prepare for GCSE or A-level examinations, I can provide a structured scheme of work tailored to the student's needs.
