About Maria
You will receive tutoring from a very experienced, patient professional, so have no worries! I started learning English when I was eight years old due to being an immigrant from Eastern Europe, and although now about 40 years later I speak, read, and write 100% fluently adult like a "native" English speaker (in fact, better than most American-born people!), I offer my own background and experiences to motivate and encourage you because I know how challenging and confusing the English language can be. I believe people who had to learn English as a second or third language at a young age have a better understanding of the needs of other international students. I have a B.S. in Human Physiology/Pre-Medicine from Michigan State University and a M.A. degree in Educational Administration from Central Michigan University. I have lived in Florida for over 20 years, and I have taught ESL in both the public schools here and also taught overseas for three years in the Middle East and Europe. In addition, I worked as a college career advisor at New College of Florida in Sarasota for four years where I provided undergraduate students with career counseling and assistance in writing academic papers, graduate school admission essays, and resumes for employers. My online lessons are based on your ESL needs and can include a focus on accent reduction, vocabulary development, reading comprehension, grammar, verb tenses, idioms, and many others. I work online with students of all ages including adults. I've taught ESL/ESOL for over 12 years in Florida's public schools and also taught overseas for three years in the Middle East and Europe. I'm a "native" English speaker who immigrated with my parents to the United States when I was only seven years old from Eastern Europe, so I fully understand the challenges of learning the English language! I'm a Florida-licensed professional teacher and have also worked with many international students for over 25 years in proofreading and editing their academic and business documents.
