Cathy's CV

Education:
I am an English student (Q300) at the University of Nottingham, starting my degree in 2015 and with a predicted end-date of summer 2018. I managed to gain an unconditional offer for my entry into the University of Nottingham at the end of 2014 from my personal statement and predicted grades. My current degree grade is a 2:1.
My GCSE results in August 2013 were 3A*s, 7As and a B.

My A level results in August 2015 were 2 As (English and French) and a C (Psychology), plus a C at AS (Biology).
I was given an all round scholarship for 6th Form at Woodbridge school where I studied my four AS Levels: English Literature, Psychology, Biology and French. Following tests and interviews in November 2012, I was also offered an academic scholarship for 6th Form by Framlingham College but I decided to stay at Woodbridge School.
I was an active member of many voluntary school activities including being a Sergeant in the RAF CCF (completed leadership training course parts 1 & 2, various camps, flying, teaching and leading small teams). I also gained the instructors lanyard for my skills in teaching and leadership. I also participated in Cantabile school choir, Choral Society and weekly singing lessons (working on Grade 5). I sung as part of the school choir in May 2012 at the Royal Albert Hall ‘World Hunger Day’ concert supporting artists such as Dionne Warwick and Cliff Richard.
I completed the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) award in 2012 and the Silver DofE in February 2014 which included voluntary teaching of Karate at Debenham Karate Club and the London Moonwalk in May 2013 raising £220 for breast cancer charities. Finally in summer 2014 I completed my Gold DofE award in the Atlas Mountains in Morocco where I completed a one week trekking expedition concluding with reaching the peak of Mount Toubkal at 4167m (the highest mountain in northern Africa) and various volunteering projects working with the local people in Tacchedirt.
Extra Curricular:
Independently, I have travelled to Morocco (2014) with my school, and Nepal for a month (2016) with Plan My Gap Year and volunteering as an English teacher and travelling the countries backpacking. In the volunteering component I taught children aged between 5 and 17, and worked to improve their pronunciation, general oral skills and their confidence in conversational English.
In first year I mentored a GCSE student in Nottingham as part of the IntoUniversity mentoring scheme where my role entailed supporting my mentee socially and academically in order to allow them to reach their full potential.
I also help run tours of the University of Nottingham campus, as another voluntary part of my work with IntoUniversity, for primary school children from the local area. The tours are largely led independently and are a great responsibility and incredibly rewarding, as the children really love the university and it inspires them to work hard towards their future aspirations.
Nottingham has a student-run, award-winning magazine called IMPACT. Since joining the university in 2015 I have been involved in the Film&TV section of the magazine, and had various articles published on the website, for example, a film review of PAN (2015) and an obituary piece on Alan Rickman (2016). I have also written for The Tab, a student-run magazine that runs online and is a national enterprise. One of my pieces had over 3,000 readers in one day, and topped the Nottingham Tab editors leaderboard for that month. Summer 2016 I have been an intern with The Tab, and specifically for a section called Babe focusing on women, writing an article a week. My writers page on The Tab currently has over 70,000 views on my published stories. I am also a writer for HerCampus Nottingham, and now on the executive team as the Events Manager. My executive role includes organising socials, charity events and the largest event of the year - the charity fashion show held in Nottingham City Centre in May every year. The fashion show fundraising for Coppafeel organised by myself in 2017 raised £540.
For third year, I have been elected as Vice President of The University of Nottingham English Society, a gold status society which is also sponsored by KPMG. In this role I am responsible for the welfare of society members, smooth running of the committee team, assisting the President and organising large events such as the Arts Ball at Christmas.
I have also done 2 tandem skydives from 13,000 feet with UK Parachuting in Beccles, and the next step is to pay for the training course in solo freefall, hopefully over the next two to three years.
I am passionate about raising money for charity and have completed various challenges to this avail, ranging from the Ipswich and London Moonwalks to the latest being the 5K Pretty Muddy Run for Cancer Research UK in June 2016 for which I have raised £306. Through my work as Her Campus Nottingham Events Manager I also ran a bake sale which raised £123 for the mental health charity MQ.
Work experience:
In 2012 I volunteered (as part of my Bronze DofE) for one week at Castle Vets in Framlingam. My duties included cleaning, looking after animals and observing surgery.
From July 2013 to June 2014 I worked occasional shifts at Seckford Hall Hotel, Woodbridge undertaking duties such as serving food and wine, polishing and taking food & drink orders for events such as weddings, parties, business and charity dinners.
From June 2014 to July 2015 I have worked with the catering and serving team at Woodbridge School, waitressing at large formal events.
Also, I have worked at two Boden 3 day sales held on the Suffolk Showground during June, one in 2015 and the other in 2013. My roles there included customer assistance, cleaning and general floor management.
Currently I have two part-time jobs, one at Red Bar in Nottingham as a bartender and another as a care assistant in Yaxley care home, specialising in dementia patients.
For 3 months in summer 2017 I worked as a camp counsellor at an all boys camp called Camp Shohola in Greeley, Pennsylvania. I worked with young boys aged 6 to 14, and taught a wide range of activities such as waterskiing, wake boarding, swimming, fishing, canoeing and theatre, and also had the opportunity to become a fully certified lifeguard (American Red Cross).
General:
I have good experience of using computers for word processing, presentation preparation and internet applications. I have access to a car and a full driving license. I also have experience in leadership, can speak fluent French and I have excellent interpersonal skills. Furthermore, from mentoring, volunteering, camp counselling and working as a classroom assistant I have teaching experience. From my journalistic work with Impact,The Tab and Her Campus Nottingham I have proven an ability to write eloquently and create popular material for a large audience of readers both online and in print.
