About Jakob

I'm Jakob. I grew up in Nottingham, England, and went through the UK school system there before sitting my 5 A-Levels in Maths, Further Maths, Electronics, Polish and Computer Science. And currently I'm an electronics engineering student.

I've tutored alongside my own studies too, working with students on the same Maths papers I was revising at the time. That taught me that explaining something clearly is a completely different skill from being able to do it, and it's the part I've practised most.

I'm bilingual, native English and native Polish, which means if an explanation isn't landing, I can come at it a completely different way, and I can work with students who are stronger in either language.

I take the work seriously. I turn up prepared, I keep to the slot we agree, and I'd rather work with a few students properly than fill a calendar and rush through lessons.

I'm Jakob. I'm an electronics engineering student, and I sat my A-Levels recently. I teach Maths the way it has to be answered in the exam, and in a way where you understand the underlying systems rather than how a textbook puts it. I use an approach called mastery learning, and I've used these systems myself and with the students I've taught.

HOW I TEACH

Mastery learning is built on blocks. Each block is a skill that harder topics sit on top of, and we don't move up until the block underneath is secure. Rearranging equations is a good example: until a student can rearrange confidently, trigonometry keeps going wrong, however well the trig itself has been taught.

A lot of students aren't stuck on the maths. They're losing marks on method, and on the way they write out their answers and working. So I lead my lessons by building up the student's understanding of the basic systems first, because a new or harder topic is always made of blocks they've already met.

For students who are further behind, I go back to the blocks underneath and rebuild from there. You can't build on gaps.

I also build my lessons on approaches with real evidence behind them: retrieval practice, spaced review, and feedback grounded in the mark scheme, rather than learning styles or vague "personalised" teaching.

I teach any UK exam board: AQA, Edexcel, OCR, WJEC or CCEA. I teach that board's conventions rather than a generic version of the topic.

A TYPICAL LESSON

1. Start with your current work
We look at work the student has already done, homework, past papers or class notes, to find the exact step where it goes wrong.

2. Find the gap
We work through a similar question together. The problem usually isn't the whole topic. It's one underlying block that everything else is built on. That block is what we work on.

3. Build the block
I make sure that basic system is genuinely solid: the idea itself, not just the method for one question type. Once it's there, harder topics stop being separate things to memorise and become combinations of things the student already knows.

4. Apply it to real exam questions
Straight onto past-paper questions from your board. We go through where the marks are actually awarded and where they're commonly lost, particularly in how you lay out your working.

5. One on your own
A fresh timed question, done alone while I stay quiet. That's how we both find out whether it's genuinely learned or just familiar while I'm talking.

6. Review previous topics
The last part of every lesson goes back over earlier work, to check it's still there. If it isn't, we get it back before moving on.

AFTER THE LESSON

You get written notes covering exactly what we did: where the student went wrong, where they improved, and a short set of questions aimed at that same gap.

WHAT SETS ME APART

I sat these papers recently. I know the current specifications: the exact wording, the question styles, and the topics that have moved between tiers. It isn't long since I revised them myself.

I also build my own revision materials, so what you get is made for your board and your current grade rather than photocopied from somewhere generic.

WHO THE LESSONS ARE FOR

Students come to me at every point on the range:

- Struggling, or having lost confidence in maths: we rebuild from the basics
- Stuck at a 4 and aiming for a 6
- Sitting on a 6 and aiming for an 8
- Already strong and pushing for full marks

I teach KS3 and GCSE Maths at both Higher and Foundation tier, any UK exam board. I also work with home-educated students and adults returning to maths after a long break.

Lessons are online with a shared whiteboard you can write on in real time, and I keep weekday evening and weekday daytime slots, so there's usually something free without a long wait.

Send me a message with your exam board, your current working grade and your target, and I'll tell you honestly whether I'm the right tutor. If I'm not, I'll say so.
