About Janis
I am a school teacher first and foremost. However, I have always had a very keen sense of people, their feelings, their intentions while communicating, and how to read body language and vocal/facial cues. It's something I genuinely enjoy doing. I reflect upon it. The entire world of communication fascinates me. I study it, I think about it, and I continually hone my own skills.
I currently work for the Surrey School District (Canada) as a teacher and Integration/Inclusion specialist. Prior to that I have taught English at academies and international schools in South Korea and China. I have taught many people privately how to speak English, improve their confidence, and navigate the world of verbal and non-verbal communication in all three countries.
I like to make people feel comfortable. As a teacher, I know how to "read the need" and facilitate all kinds of learning. I know that a student must first feel respected and understood before any real learning can take place. I enjoy finding that sweet spot between Challenge and Achievement: that time when the learner realizes that they are learning. That is personal empowerment. That charges the engine for future learning and future success.

First, I am an expert communicator. I use my knowledge of body language, facial cues and voice tone variations to a) understand the speaker, b) quickly identify their intention and goal in the conversation, and c) facilitate a meaningful conversation based on mutual awareness, trust, and positive intention. I can teach you how to understand the goals and intentions of the people around you.
My lessons will be catered to your specific needs. Do you have trouble "reading the room"? Do you often misunderstand people's message or intentions? Would you like to understand the process of face-to-face conversation from start to finish and glean true connection and understanding? I can help you build these skills.
The lessons will begin by identifying your target concerns with communication. Each lesson will be built to specifically address those specific target concerns. Some examples:
1. You must prepare for a meeting, workshop or presentation
2. You consistently have trouble "getting the point" or feeling connected during casual conversations.
3. You misread people and often have misunderstandings, which leads to awkward interactions and poor connections.
4. You can't seem to enjoy conversations and want to build friendships.
5. You've heard the following from your family or friends: "You just don't understand me" or "You just don't get it!" and suffer many arguments in your daily life.
6. You are in customer service and need to improve your skills either in-person or on-screen.
I have many years experience teaching English professionally and privately in Korea and China, and I am an elementary school teacher and Integration / Inclusion specialist for my local school board. I have a degree from Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, Canada specializing in Education and Psychology.
After our first consultation, I will provide a detailed set of lesson outlines, including an Achievement Goal(s), daily lesson topics (formulated to your specific needs), and small tasks or challenges to hone the learned skills. I like to use real-life scenarios to practice, which will include all kinds of actual conversations. This is a great way to get ready to use your new communication skills in the real world!
I am open to helping anyone, but some of my target students may be:
-autists or others with communication and empathic challenges
-people who are trying to make more friends
-people who are struggling with relationships at work or socially
-ESL children, youth and adults
-new immigrants to the US and Canada who want to feel more comfortable using English
-people who have trouble picking up social cues and body language cues
