About James

I specialize in music production, sound design, and composition for film. I am a keyboardist & songwriter in the bands RØISEN, Tush and The Future Primitive. I also write, produce & perform original music & DJ under the moniker Hemingway, a project that's been ongoing for over a decade. I've remixed several artists over the years, including Metronomy, Bag Raiders, Electric Youth and Josh Reichman. I've also released many singles and EPs (both physically and digitally) on labels like Sweat it Out!, Cosmic Resonance Records (my own imprint), Stratford Court, Apostasie Records, Brilliantine Records and more. The success of my releases has allowed me to perform in Toronto, LA and abroad, supporting acts like Tornado Wallace, RAC, Classixx, Tim Green and more. In the past few years, I've been producing techno/IDM music under the moniker Cydux and recently released the Breathing Puddles EP, which was featured on NTS radio. As a composer, I have completed works for clients such as Blood Brothers Brewery, Front Range Films, and Underknown. I've worked on short films, commercials, documentaries and web content on YouTube. I'm obsessed with all things music and hope to share my knowledge with up-and-comers that are just as passionate as I am!

About the lesson

I offer a personalized approach to learning that is flexible to suit your pace and level of expertise. Whether you're entirely new to music production or have a few years of experience under your belt, I can offer mentorship and training to help you meet your specific goals.

Over my 10+ years of experience, I've produced music in a wide variety of genres, from house, techno, breakbeat, jazz, pop, funk and even orchestral trailer music. No matter what genre of music you're interested in, I can help you develop better tactics and approaches for composition, sound design, mixing and mastering. Or, if you're stuck on a song and need some help finishing it, I can work with you!

While my main specialty is working with Ableton, many of the fundamentals I teach apply to whatever DAW you're working in. I find everyone works differently, and I've found the best way to learn is to experiment and observe others. I can take you through some of my own projects and discuss the creative and technical decisions I made to finish them. Or if you'd like to focus on one aspect, such as drum programming, sound design or mixing, we can keep our lessons specialized with hands-on learning.

I'm available evenings and weekends (Eastern Standard Time).

I spoke to him during the initial consultation to decide if he/I felt we were a good match, told him what I was looking for and a few days later he delivered exactly what I was hoping, and then some. He not only pointed out my weaknesses but pointed out my strength, then gave me a general idea of where I was in my production skills. He then provided me real life examples of how I might up my production.
