About Theresa

I went to Leeds College of Music (Leeds Conservatoire) where my principal study was trumpet. I stayed in Leeds and studied to become a Secondary music teacher.

I have now been a Secondary School Music teacher for 18 years and been Head of Music for 10 years.

I am passionate about music education and truly believe anyone can get to where they want to be with a little guidance, support and hard work. I want to share my knowledge, skill and experience to help others become more advanced in their musical journey, wherever they are in it.

I can help to develop listening analysis skill, music specific essay writing, performance, composition, music theory and conducting.

I live in Leeds with my family and enjoy live music and getting out to explore and have fun.

About the lesson

Experienced, Supportive Music Tutor – GCSE & A-Level

After 18 years of teaching music in a Secondary School, I have learned that every student is different, and there is no single approach to learning music successfully. Over the years, I have developed a wide range of teaching and learning strategies that allow me to adapt lessons to each individual student.

My aim is to make music accessible, manageable and enjoyable, particularly for students who sometimes find aspects of music theory, composition, listening or analysis challenging or overwhelming. I break down complex topics into smaller, understandable steps and explain concepts in different ways until they make sense.
Your lessons will move at your pace. I regularly check understanding through questioning, practical activities and “show me” tasks, so we can identify areas that need further explanation and build confidence as we go.

What does a typical lesson look like?

Every lesson will be tailored to the individual student and their specific needs. We might begin with a short quiz or retrieval activity to revisit previous learning, followed by a main task where we explore and develop new knowledge or skills.
I will check your understanding throughout the lesson using questions, discussion and practical tasks, before finishing with a recap of what we have learned and what you are confident with.

Whether you need help understanding a particular topic, preparing for an examination, developing your composition, improving your performance or simply building your confidence in music, I will work with you to find an approach that works for you.
