About Gareth
Growing up in Hong Kong, I experienced firsthand the challenges of tutoring and the discomfort that can come from learning with someone unfamiliar. This shaped my approach to education as I strive to be not just a tutor, but a supportive and trusted mentor that students feel comfortable opening up to. I believe that building a strong, trusting relationship is fundamental to effective learning. When students feel understood and respected, they are more engaged, receptive, and confident in their abilities.
I hold a minor in Philosophy from the University of British Columbia, where I developed strong critical thinking, reasoning, and communication skills. I incorporate these into my teaching by encouraging students to think independently, ask questions, and understand concepts rather than simply memorize them.
I am energetic, enthusiastic, and a strong team player, but above all, I am patient and approachable with children. I recognize when students need space to process their thoughts and when they need encouragement to move forward. I use positive reinforcement to motivate learning and build confidence. I believe that fostering a positive and supportive environment is key to helping students grow both academically and personally.

Gareth worked on improving my son’s close reading. My son tells me that it makes a lot more sense now. He both helped with homework assignments as well as came up with his own program reviewing the novel 1984.
Garreth is reliable and works very well with kids. He is patient and knows just how hard to push. My son’s math has improved with his help.
