About Afonso

I'm a composer and conductor with 10+ years experience as a music professional and teacher. Very excited about sharing my love of music with anyone, and happy to teach about all sorts of music!

Career Highlights:
- Conducted the BBC Philharmonic at the Media City, Salford, as well as many other orchestras.
- As a music producer, I worked in recordings of 200+ tracks (for film, VGM and TV) in studios in the UK, Portugal, Hungary and Czechia, working with hundreds of musicians from Grammy award winners to hobbyist composers.
- Received awards for my compositions, which were featured in several music festivals.
- Privately taught students from ages 8 to 52.

I've graduated from the RNCM (MMUS in conducting), Metropolitana (BMUS in conducting) and University of Évora (BMUS in composition). But in reality I have been living with music around me for as long as I can remember.

About the lesson

Subjects I teach:
- Music theory;
- Composition (Contemporary, Classical, Song-Writing);
- Basics of music production;
- Conducting;
- Guitar;
- Piano;

The actual content will be flexible and adapted to each student. My speciality is a "general" music lesson covering one instrument, theory basics and composing.

My main purpose is to give every student complete "fluency" in music, be it while listening, performing, or composing, though a deep and general understanding of how music works.

Also available to help prepare for specific academic/career objectives, like exams or auditions.

Other details:
I believe 1h is generally the ideal class duration, but we can discuss different options!
Children (from ages 8+) and adults welcome!
I teach at my home, online, or can go the student's home anywhere in Manchester City Center, Hulme, Oxford Road area up to Whitworth Park, contact me if close to these areas and I might be available further away.
Can teach more than one student at a time with a cheaper rate per student, contact for details.
Can teach in English or Portuguese.
