About David
I've been a cellist and cello teacher teaching in New York's Hudson Valley for over thirty years.
I hold a master's degree (Performance) from Kent State University.
I also hold a bachelor's degree (Performance) from Franklin Pierce University.
I gained experience working as a cellist in pit band orchestras for Broadway show productions in college, performed in chamber music concerts in both graduate school and college, and gave required recitals for my undergraduate and graduate degrees.
While the cello is a challenging instrument to learn, let me have the chance to share all the tips and tricks I've learned over the years to help YOU to gain the confidence and knowledge to become a successful player!

My approach to teaching a lesson is simple. In an introductory lesson, I will assess the students' understanding of the instrument. I will look closely at overall form (how they hold the instrument and their overall seating posture), and their left- and right-hand technique. Furthermore, I will ask them to play a scale or a short piece for first-year students. At this point, I will be able to get a sense of what their strengths are and what we can improve upon to make them a more confident and successful player. Having the right tools is fundamental to making a cellist a very good cellist!
The materials I use for teaching my classes are books that are invaluable to building good and sound technique along with some specific rote techniques specifically with right hand (bow grip) and left-hand position (how the fingers work on the fingerboard to ensure good technique). All this comes within a warm, friendly, and encouraging environment for optimal learning!
