About Brittany
I live in the Pacific Northwest where I teach ESOL at a Community College. I often develop curriculum for my students and I am always seeking new and better ways to help my students more effectively learn language skills. In my free time, I enjoy hiking, backpacking, and playing games with my husband and four stepsons.

I use a student-centered, skill-focused approach. This means that I want to know what skills you want to learn and in what context, then I make my lessons fit around your goals. I do not work primarily on grammar and vocabulary - these are base level things you need in order to read, write, speak, or listen in English. My typical lesson plan starts with an exercise to activate schema, these exercises are meant to help you pull the English that you already know to the front of your brain where you can easily access it. From there, I will teach you a new skill for 5-10 minutes. The rest of the lesson is focused on practicing the new skill. First, we will practice it in an easier way where I can quickly assess if you understand the skill or not, then we will practice it in a way that mimics how you will use the skill in real life. At the end of our class, I will give you some ideas on how to work on fluency on your own. When you first learn a new skill it takes a lot of work for your brain to perform it, as you practice it more and more it becomes more natural until you hardly have to think about it anymore. I especially enjoy teaching pronunciation, my speaking lessons will integrate some pronunciation pieces. I love teaching how English is like music and how "what you read and what you say is different, not the same." My students and I spend time enjoying the beauty of language in all its complexities. I also love bringing laughter and an appreciation of what the student brings to each class. I can create lessons for all levels of English language learners and all ages. I currently professionally teach CEFR A1 adult language learners at a Community College, but I have taught all different ages and levels in the past.
