About Tyler

As a Chinese tutor, my qualifications stem from both academic and immersive experiences. I have three years of formal Chinese study at the high school level, and I am currently pursuing a Chinese minor at Utah State University. This educational background provides me with a solid foundation in Chinese grammar, vocabulary, and language structure. In addition, I spent two years as a missionary in San Francisco, where I spoke Chinese daily and translated church meetings, giving me invaluable experience in practical language use.

I have a passion for language learning, and I find Chinese to be a fascinating and beautiful language. While it is notoriously challenging for English speakers to learn, I have navigated that journey myself allowing me to relate to my students and guide them through the complexities of mastering the language. I understand the unique hurdles they face and can offer strategies to make the learning process more accessible and enjoyable.

Chinese Tutoring Services with Tyler (彭德乐)
If you want to become a proficient Chinese speaker, you need practice in real conversation (more than your 3 hours/week in class). I focus on helping students gain confidence in their speaking and listening skills, with an emphasis on pronunciation and intonation. As someone who has spent a lot of time with other students who went through an immersion Chinese program in elementary school, it is not enough to have a large vocabulary and basic reading skills. If you want to impress in the real world, you need to be able to speak clearly, which unfortunately is one of the most overlooked aspects of school Chinese programs in the United States that I have seen. My goal is to bridge that gap and get students speaking at a level where native Chinese speakers won't know they're talking to an American on the phone.
