About Ovidiu

I’m a dedicated chess enthusiast and tutor with a strong track record of helping students unlock their full potential at the board. I hold an undergraduate degree in Environmental Sciences from Brunel University London and have achieved an ECF rating of 1900 through over five years of competitive play. As time moves on, I continually refine my own understanding of chess psychology and strategy through regular study of grandmaster games and attendance at workshops and events in London, ensuring that my lessons remain fresh and informed by the latest insights. Outside chess, I run a small business in nuts and dried fruits, which has taught me the value of patience, discipline and adaptability, all qualities which I try to bring into every tutoring session. My goal is always to empower you to make confident decisions at the board to enjoy the game more fully and to achieve tangible progress with every lesson!

About the lesson

My lessons combine structured technique development with personalised feedback to encourage genuine improvement in chess thinking, strategy and psychology. I employ a blended and student-centred methodology of interactive demonstration, guided practice and reflective analysis, also using real-game examples from the top players, tactical puzzles and endgame studies. Each session typically lasts one hour, although ninety-minute lessons are available for more in-depth exploration of complex positions. With over five years’ competitive experience and an ECF rating of 1900, I have spent the past five years tutoring students at all levels, from complete beginners to club tournament-calibre players at the Uxbridge Chess Club, helping them refine their decision-making process, time management and mental resilience. My approach emphasises understanding the underlying principles behind each move rather than raw memorisation, and I adapt every lesson to the individual’s goals, whether that be mastering opening repertoires, improving middlegame planning or strengthening endgame technique. Lessons are suitable for learners of all ages, from young children eager to grasp the basics to adults seeking to elevate their play, and for any standard, be it casual, club or competitive chess. By the end of each lesson, students will not only have practised fresh material but also received tailored exercises to consolidate learning and build confidence at the board.
