About Sharla

I have taught well over 2000 students in my years of teaching. Commonly, many come to me hating math. I teach in a way that students are able to grasp it. Once it clicks, students flourish and excel beyond their own expectations. I had students that met on their state assessment (Smarter Balanced Assessment) for the first time in their lives! It is the best feeling in the world to positively impact a student's learning journey.

About the lesson

My primary goal as a tutor is to fill the gap of learning that a student is struggling with. This will be done with personalized delivery of lessons that are tailored to the students individual needs and learning style. I believe engagement is even more crucial online than in a regular classroom environment. I would encourage students to actively participate in the learning process through discussions, thinking out loud to walk me through their thinking process, problem-solving and hands-on activities. I would offer praise and encouragement to help boost their confidence and motivation. In the same token, I would also share my feedback with things that can be worked on before the next session and offer constructive feedback.

A typical lesson would begin with a warm-up; reviewing previously learned material to reinforce understanding. Then I would introduce new material; when it can be used, and why we would use it. We would work through examples together as I explain each step. I would then assign independent practice; where a student practices what they just learned. It would depend on the age if I would do examples on a whiteboard or interactive games. I would end the lesson with a review to recap what I just taught, give an assessment of the student’s understanding and offer suggestions on ways to improve.

I come with experience. I have been teaching since I graduated with my Masters in Teaching in 2000. I have taught 8th grade math for nearly 15 years. I am effective in my teaching because I am able to break down and explain complex material in ways students can grasp it. I come with patience, enthusiasm and empathy. I want my learners to feel supported and have a positive learning experience with me.
