  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I speak Korean fluently because it is my native language and I lived in Korea for 45 years. However, my deeper understanding of Korean—its structure, nuances, and beauty—comes from my academic studies and many years of teaching experience. Studying Korean Literature and Korean Language Education allowed me to view my mother tongue from both emotional and analytical perspectives.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

A historical figure who symbolically represents the Korean language and culture is 세종대왕. He created Hangeul so that ordinary people could learn to read and write more easily. His philosophy embodied a deep respect for communication, equality, and education—values that continue to influence Korean culture to this day.

Among living figures, I would name 한강, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2024. Through her powerful Korean novels, she expresses Korea’s culture, history, and the emotional landscape of its people with profound sensitivity.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

I especially love the word “jeong” (정, 情). It refers to a deep emotional bond that develops over time through shared experiences. Because it is difficult to translate precisely into English, it feels uniquely Korean to me. The concept of jeong beautifully demonstrates how language embodies the emotions and values of a society.

I also cherish the Korean greeting “Annyeonghaseyo” (안녕하세요). Its direct meaning can be understood as “Is your soul at peace?” I believe this expression reflects the philosophy and emotional depth of the Korean people, as it begins a conversation by wishing for the inner peace and well-being of the other person.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Korean is not simply a means of communication for me; it is a language that carries Korea’s history, identity, and emotions. As a Korean language teacher, I feel a responsibility to help learners not only speak accurately but also understand the cultural context and subtle nuances behind the language. I believe that language serves as a bridge that connects people across borders.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

The greatest difficulty in learning Korean is its sentence structure and honorific system. For learners who are accustomed to Indo-European languages, these

features can feel unfamiliar at first. However, once students understand the logic of Korean sentence structure and grasp the system of speech levels, they often realize that Korean is actually a highly systematic language.

The most effective way to support learning is consistent exposure to the language. That is why I recommend writing a diary in Korean or watching favorite Korean YouTube content to practice listening and reading. In my classes, I focus on encouraging students to steadily expand their language skills without losing interest or motivation.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

When I was studying linguistics at university, I had the experience of structurally analyzing Korean expressions that I had always used naturally. At that time, I came to a profound realization that what I had felt to be “natural” was in fact built upon highly sophisticated grammatical principles. Since then, I have not relied solely on intuition in my teaching, but have focused on explaining the language in a clear and logical way.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

I lived in Korea for 45 years and now reside in New Zealand, an English-speaking country. At a later stage in life, I had to restart my own English learning journey, and this experience has allowed me to deeply understand the challenges of learning a new language.

Reflecting on what teaching methods were most effective for me when studying English has greatly influenced the way I teach Korean. This personal journey has encouraged me to think more critically about language education, and I believe it has significantly helped me develop more effective teaching methods and learning materials for my students.
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

I spent many years in Korea working as a broadcast producer and scriptwriter, a career that required me to communicate in Korean not just fluently, but with clarity, precision, and impact. This professional experience gives me a unique edge that sets me apart from other tutors.

Beyond grammar and vocabulary, I bring the historical and cultural context behind every word and expression into my lessons, providing students with a deeper, richer understanding of the language. This is a perspective that goes far beyond theoretical linguistics.

I’ve seen firsthand how much more engaged students become when they uncover the stories, traditions, and history behind Korean expressions. This is a key reason my students enjoy and value my lessons.

For me, true fluency in Korean isn’t just about speaking correctly—it’s about understanding the emotions, culture, and depth embedded in the language. That’s the level of mastery I guide my students toward.
