About Francesca
Hi there! I'm Francesca, an English graduate from the University of St Andrews, where I also completed modules in Spanish. I recently completed my master's degree at the University of Cambridge, and am now working towards my PhD at the University of Birmingham as a Midlands4Cities Doctoral Training Partner. With a longstanding passion for literature and languages, my particular focus areas include Victorian, Renaissance and Old English Literature. My personal experience with exams and University applications means that I am very aware that the stress can often weigh heavily, and areas of confusion or difficulty only add to the frustration. Having now been tutoring for several years, I have found making well-rounded revision documents, and applying these in lessons to practise plans and questions, has yielded very good results. It can be extremely difficult in a classroom environment to fully grasp a topic or to find the opportunity to ask questions and clear up confusion, which is why I use my tutoring sessions to do just this, with lessons shaped around student and parent requests, as well as the areas where I feel my students need some more help or practise.

My main focus during tutorials is to target the needs of individual students; whether areas of grammar, vocabulary or essay structuring are making it difficult to access higher grade boundaries, or if students need help with techniques for memorising quotes or managing time during exams. My lesson structure functions around pre-prepared work based on a student's needs, which we can work through together, allowing students to highlight areas of difficulty. This might be close-reading exercises, analytical discussion about a set text, essay planning and writing, etc. I also look at past papers, mark schemes and the bi-annual examiner feedback, as this can really help to gather an understanding of what markers will be looking for. For English A Level and GCSE, I aim to help students to find a balance between historical context, deep textual analysis, critical perspectives and an overall knowledge of the set texts. I also run lessons dedicated to essay writing, grammar and structure, with useful time management techniques. I have found that this gives students all of the materials they need for their exams. For Spanish tutorials, my lesson structures are centred around practising and memorising key topic vocabulary, as well as all of the grammar structures useful for both speaking and written exams. I also do reading and listening practices with my students, and shape these sessions to target the areas they feel the least confident in.
