About PD

P Das is an independent researcher with nearly two decades of experience teaching MA English and BA English Honors/Major students of the University of Calcutta. His teaching centers on close and intensive reading, clear explanation of difficult texts, literary criticism and theory, and the development of well-argued university examination answers.

His approach to literature is interdisciplinary. Where a text requires it, he connects literature with history, philosophy, politics, society, culture, linguistics, psychology, anthropology and mythology. Classical European and Indian traditions are also examined comparatively where they help illuminate later literature, literary forms, myths, symbols and concepts. Such connections help students understand not simply what a text says, but how it produces meaning and how meanings change across historical and cultural contexts.

His academic interests extend across literature, linguistics, philosophy of language, mythology and the evolution of human culture. His research has been presented at international academic conferences in the USA, Italy, Spain, South Korea and China, as well as at academic institutions in India.

His research has been presented at international academic conferences in the USA, Italy, Spain, South Korea and China, as well as at academic institutions in India. This continuing research experience also informs his teaching of research methodology, academic argument, literature review, interpretation and research-oriented reading.

His aim is to develop independent readers rather than encourage dependence on ready-made interpretations. Students are guided to recognize arguments and textual patterns, evaluate different interpretations, use literary theory intelligently, and construct clear, evidence-based arguments of their own.

**FPSU as a Comparative Phonosemantic Framework in Indian and European Classical Literature Studies**

A distinctive part of P Das’s research is Function-oriented PhonoSemantic Universals (FPSU), his own original theoretical framework for investigating how speech sounds, linguistic forms, functions and meanings may be systematically related across languages. FPSU asks a particularly fundamental question: can the phonological structure of ancient words preserve semantic clues that later conventional, mythological or theological interpretations have obscured? By analyzing recurring relations among phonemes, morphemes, functions and meanings, the framework attempts to reconstruct possible earlier, non-theological and function-based meanings of key words and concepts, and thereby to approach what the earliest composers or authors may originally have intended before subsequent religious and doctrinal reinterpretations accumulated around their language.

A paper on FPSU presented by P Das at an academic program of IIT (BHU), Varanasi, in collaboration with Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Netherlands, applies this approach specifically to ancient Indian literature and linguistic traditions. It is, however, methodologically broader in scope and intended to be comparative in nature. Because FPSU is conceived as a cross-linguistic framework, the same method can potentially be tested on Ancient Greek and Greco-Roman linguistic and literary traditions—asking whether the sound-structure and functional history of crucial words can help recover earlier layers of meaning behind later mythological or theological readings. FPSU thus seeks to add an experimental phonosemantic route to the interpretation of classical texts, alongside philology, historical linguistics, literary theory and socio-historical analysis.

Classes are designed specifically for CU MA English and BA English Honors/Major students who want serious, in-depth engagement with literature and ideas rather than only summaries or ready-made answers. Students have also joined through referrals from best university professors.

The program is particularly suited to students willing to read prescribed texts closely, engage with literary theory and difficult ideas, examine language and meaning, and gradually develop independent critical and research-oriented thinking. Previous examination marks matter less than intellectual curiosity, regular engagement and willingness to think for oneself.

Regular reading, close attention to prescribed texts and a willingness to engage with difficult ideas are expected. Previous marks are less important than academic seriousness, curiosity and willingness to think independently.

The program combines intensive syllabus study with advanced academic discussion. Prescribed texts are studied closely in relation to university requirements, while wider historical, philosophical, linguistic, psychological, anthropological, mythological, political and cultural contexts are introduced where they genuinely help interpretation.
For MA English, teaching is aligned with the breadth of the current CU program: literature and literary theory, European and Indian classical literature, Shakespeare, language and linguistics, phonetics and phonology, sociolinguistics, ELT, interdisciplinary studies, and research methodology.

For BA English Honors/Major, teaching concentrates on the Discipline-Specific/Core English papers, including literary history and texts from different periods and cultures, European Classical Literature, literary criticism and theory, and research-oriented reading and academic writing as they arise within the Major curriculum.

The emphasis is on understanding rather than memorization. Students learn how poems, plays, fiction and theoretical texts produce meaning through language, form, historical context, ideology, symbolism and literary convention.

Classes work at two connected levels:

Core Academic Study: close study of prescribed texts, difficult concepts, major critical problems, relevant contexts and systematic preparation for university examinations.

Advanced Academic Study: literary theory, interdisciplinary and comparative interpretation, language and meaning, academic argument, and the foundations of research-oriented reading and writing.

Study Materials

Research-based handouts and study materials are provided to regularly enrolled students to support classroom learning and examination preparation. Students are encouraged to use these materials critically and develop their own answers.

The program is particularly suited to students who want strong university preparation together with a deeper understanding of English literature, literary theory, language and meaning.

Who are not encouraged: Enquiries solely for ready-made notes, assignment or dissertation writing, research-paper ghostwriting, or last-minute examination answers are not accepted.
