About Paul

After spending a decade in academic research and teaching, I changed careers and decided to become a developer. Since then, I have five years of experience working with small businesses and startups building websites, tools, and other applications to achieve business objectives. Lately, I have been working on incorporating various forms of AI into websites and applications.

In several of my roles, I have built websites and used development tools with a non-technical founder or supervisors. Thus, I have experience communicating concepts and ideas in plain, accessible language that is easy to understand. My experience teaching students from diverse backgrounds also helps me communicate efficiently and effectively to students. I have worked as a personal English and Japanese tutor for several years as well.

Most of all, I have also taught myself how to build websites with no formal education at all. This has required me to put together concepts and ideas from various sources, many of which were not ideal for learning. I can relate to struggles that new students face when it comes to building and deploying websites, and this fact will resonate throughout my lessons.

About the lesson

Hi! I am a web developer who has extensive experience building websites for small businesses and creatives. Although I work with a variety of technologies, my tutoring sessions focus on helping people learn the essentials of website creation and helping them go from idea to website as quickly, efficiently, and affordably as possible!

My lessons focus on practical steps to help you learn how to build and deploy websites. I have built websites using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, as well as with WordPress and Wix. Whether you want to build your own from scratch or you want to use a no-code website, I will help you get started and learn the basics.

A typical lesson depends on your goals. If you are starting from scratch, we can begin by planning your website, choosing the right tools, and building it step by step. If you already have a website or project, we can work directly on what is giving you trouble, whether that is HTML/CSS, responsive design, JavaScript, React, deployment, hosting, or understanding code generated with AI tools.

Importantly, I focus on explaining not only what to do, but why it works, so that you become more comfortable making changes and solving problems on your own. I also avoid unnecessary jargon and adjust the pace to your level.

I believe it is important that you understand the concepts behind what you learn and CONTEXTUALIZE IT within the bigger frame of things. When I was learning website creation and web development, I often struggled because teachers would gloss over important concepts or fail to explain WHY they were doing things a certain way. I try to avoid this by helping students understand concepts in plain and clear language.

My background includes several years of teaching experience, so I am comfortable working with complete beginners as well as students who already know some programming but need help applying it to a real project.

We will also discuss the pros, cons, and pitfalls of using AI to help you build websites. I frequently work with Claude Code and Open AI’s Codex in various capacities. Thus, I recognize that these can be powerful tools, but they also carry risks that you need to know about. My lessons will incorporate as much or as little AI usage as you would like. We can also discuss AI fundamentals and safety as they pertain to website building.

My lessons would be most useful for beginners who want to build their first website; students learning HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React, or related technologies; people building a portfolio, personal, or small-business website; and anyone who has started a website but is stuck on a technical or design problem.

The goal is for you to leave each lesson with a clearer understanding of your project and concrete progress toward a working website.
