How To Become an English Tutor in Nigeria

To become an English teacher in Nigeria, there are several requirements you'd need to consider. Whether you're interested in giving primary level students a great teaching experience, you enjoy teaching secondary level students or you want to start a career as a lecturer in the university, you'll need to acquire the requirements needed for you to become an exceptional English teacher.

Acquiring the right education and certification sets you apart, thereby making your tutoring services to be in high demand. As an English teacher, there are several opportunities available for you, even more than other school subjects. Since English is an international language, you get to teach English online, offer your services as a private home tutor and be a mentor for students who want to apply for standardized tests.

There are so many perks that come with being an English tutor. So let's look at the requirements that can make you one of the best English teachers in Nigeria.

What Qualifications Do You Need To Become an English Teacher in Nigeria

Before you can teach students in a school, at home or online, you'll need to be eligible. Here are two types of requirements that can help you kickstart your English tutoring career:

Academic Experience

An academic profile is the first thing you'd need to become a teacher of any subject. Although many teachers start with an NCE certification, a bachelor's degree is one of the best ways of raising your tutoring career. You can get a degree in English education or English arts in any university of your choice in Nigeria.

You can also get a TEFL or TESOL certification which allows you to work anywhere in Nigeria, and the world.

Non-Academic Experience

Teaching students of all levels is not an easy task. And tutoring, in general, is a demanding job. To become a professional English teacher, you'd need to build yourself personally; it means paying more attention to your teaching methods and how your students react to them. How have your lessons influenced the learning of your students? Are you dynamic in your lessons? And are you constantly working on improving your profile as an English tutor? These questions can serve as a guide on how your work pattern is and should be.

Having great years of tutoring experience is another prerequisite to becoming a good teaching teacher. With more experience, you're better at tutoring students.

How To Set Rates For Your English Tutoring Jobs

Once you're eligible to start teaching students, the next thing to consider is your salary. Whether you're interested in online English teaching jobs, you enjoy working in a school or you find home tutoring exciting, having a basic idea of what your salary should be is necessary.

If you're a Nigerian English tutor and you'd like to work in a learning institution, your salary is  dependent on so many factors:

  • If you're working as an entry-level English teacher
  • The curriculum used in the school you'd like to teach
  • The area you live in Nigeria
  • If you're teaching in a private academy or a state/federal government learning institution
  • The teaching qualifications you have

In Nigeria, the average salary of an entry-level English tutor in a primary or secondary school is ₦60,000 while university lecturers earn an average of ₦200,000 per month.

If you prefer online tutoring or you prefer teaching your students at home, you'll be charging hourly rates. Hourly rates usually span from  ₦2000 (for new teachers with little experience) to ₦6,000 (for experienced tutors). On average, you can get tuition of at least ₦20,000 per week from private tutoring. Also, you can join teaching centres, especially if you don't want to go through the stress of looking for new students to teach.

Many of these tutoring centres have a high demand for English teachers. You can make inquiries about salary rates and do your research about the learning centre before offering your lessons to students learning at the centre.

How To Organise Lessons For Every Level as An English Teacher

English teachers can teach a wide range of age groups. For every level, there are ways you're expected to organise your English lessons. For example, the lessons you offer and how you teach a student in primary level differs from the teaching methods and lessons you'll offer a university student.

Good English teachers understand what the student should be getting in their lessons. So they ensure that the curriculum focuses on writing skills, reading and study patterns,  along with focusing on English as a language for comminucation, for thinking, etc.

As an English tutor, a crucial part of your job is knowing how to manage your hours and the activities you offer in your class. For your English course, apply different training for each level. Regardless of the hour allotted to you, work out the topic you should cover and the homework you'll give. Apply the same work plan for activities and how time you'll allot for each activity.

Remember that you have a specific number of hours, so you'd have to pay careful attention to your time. Also, how you end your course topic is important. It will help the student remember what they have learned in your class.

One of the best ways to tutor your learners is to model your class hour or hours according to real-life scenarios. If your pupils can relate to certain real-life scenarios, it will help you a lot especially if you tutor learners on grammar and vocabulary.

If you tutor pupils taking WAEC or other standardized exams, your job is to train them in such a way that their English and English literature exam stands out. Of course, you need to change your work plan when it comes to these prepclass sessions.

Apply your unique training methods for their courses, give them homework, help them analyse poetry and answer questions that may be bugging them. It will make every hour they spend with you worthwhile.

How To Find Students To Teach English Sessions

As an English tutor looking for students to teach, there are several options you can explore. If you teach in a school, you can offer to tutor your learners looking for tutorials during the school break.

However, if you intend to be a private tutor for home sessions, you'd have to do a lot of publicity. Which means you should tell your friends, family members, work colleagues and other tutors that you're looking for pupils to train.

You should also promote yourself on social media, and offer your first training for free.  You'll be attracting new learners this way.

How To Offer English Tutorials Online

Another job option is online tutoring. Not only does a job as a remote instructor allows you more time for yourself, but it also allows you to access many learners all around the world.

As a freelance tutor, you can apply for jobs on freelancing sites like Fiverr and Upwork. You can also create and provide online courses and have a personal website or Youtube channel where you offer your products and services.

Also, many learners are looking out for  TEFL courses and instructors who are good at training them. If you have experience in TEFL teaching you can offer your services, along with standardized tests like WAEC, JAMB, etc.

How To Teach English Classes For Dyslexic Students

Training children with dyslexia is quite a challenging job. You need to adopt specific strategies that can help them learn. For children that fall under this category, you need to pay extra attention to how they learn. You will require time and patience to ensure they excel in their studies.

Since knowing how to properly read helps children learn English, dyslexic learners can suffer from low self-esteem because of their inability to read and interpret what has been read. If you'd like to help children in this category to study like normal students, you'd need to create an enabling class environment.

First, you'd have to understand the problems they face. Knowing this can help save time and assist you in making the right decisions. For their classes, the tutor is respected to be flexible with the learner, lookout for the best method that's designed for the pupil and help him/her learn better by focusing on the child's strength.
