About Onyx

Hello! My name is Onyx. I use they/she pronouns and am a queer, hard of hearing (HOH), ASL and hearing aid user. Olá chamo-me Onyx. Sou portuguesa e falo português e espanhol. Os meus pronomes são elu/ela e sou queer, surda, utilizadora de Língua Gestual Americana (ASL) e aparelhos auditivos.

I grew up speaking English and was raised as a hearing individual, but have since lost almost all of my hearing. I use ASL in my day to day life!

I recently graduated with my AS in pre-nursing and am in the process of becoming an EMT. I am a HOH musician who enjoys writing, playing my instruments, and hanging out with my dogs, friends, and family. I have experience learning ASL as a second language and want to provide a safe and welcoming space for beginner and intermediate signers to start/continue their journey.

About the lesson

It is important to learn ASL from DHH individuals. I can provide an immersive environment to learn at an easy, slow pace for beginners. We all feel a little shy and awkward when starting out something new!

Since I am HoH, my sessions are sign only! This creates a great environment that preps your mind for moving away from English. Everyone is welcomed and accepted regardless of age, race, gender identity, sexuality, disability, etc.

If you are currently taking an ASL course outside of the lessons with me, I strongly suggest bringing the material into our sessions so I am able to help with any prep, clarification, or homework.
All sessions are PST ~ :3

Onyx helped me succeed when I was really struggling in my ASL 1 and 2 classes. She is very caring about her work and is heavy on helping her students make progress. She picked up ASL very well, both out of passion and need, and for that reason she was an amazing tutor
