About Garrett
I was born and raised in Boise, Idaho.
Nobody in my immediate family spoke any second languages.
However, with my mom as a local government administrator and my dad as a high school teacher, I grew up as an endlessly curious kid, constantly looking to expand his horizons.
I have a Bachelor of Arts in Diplomacy & World Affairs from Occidental College in Los Angeles, California. I have interned at organizations like CNN, the United Nations Development Programme, as well as Wasserman and Logitech's LATAM-based teams.
I spent the last few years in New York City working in marketing for major nonprofits. I now reside in Southern California.

It was the summer before my freshman year of high school when I first heard the song “Suerte” by Shakira. This song sparked an obsessive desire in me to learn and speak Spanish.
Over the summer, I began to discover more and more of Shakira's discography and began combing through the lyrics with a Spanish-English dictionary, creating my own translations.
Coming into my first Spanish class that fall, I was already familiar with the basics of Spanish from the music and I was able to understand many words and phrases.
Within just 4 months of the beginning my translations, I was already having fluent conversations with native speakers and understanding the music I had been listening to.
The act of translating the songs for myself taught me new vocabulary, verb tenses, and grammatical structures that were far beyond what I could possibly learn in any traditional Spanish class.
"Suerte" first introduced me to Spanish. "No Creo" taught me the subjunctive tense. “Estoy Aqui” taught me how to conjugate verbs. I learned to roll my r's through "Ciega, Sordomuda."
Learning Spanish changed my life. In college, I studied abroad in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where I was able to live with ease among the local porteños, as well as excel in my high-level international relations courses—in which I was the only American student.
I will cater our lessons to your musical tastes and help you embark on a similar journey. While memorizing vocab and conjugation charts can be helpful, it is my sincere belief that true language acquisition is impossible without a sincere emotional attachment to the process—and music is the perfect vehicle for that!
Whether you are looking to perfect a regional accent, improve your general speaking ability, or do not speak a lick of Spanish, I'm excited to help you embark on this musical and linguistic journey.
