About Wesley

Hello,

My name is Wes. I am 32 years old, and I recently stepped down from a vocational education position of five years, in which I taught a myriad of classes to college age students. Prior to this, I taught as a substitute teacher in my own small high school that I grew up attending in rural Illinois. My mother is a high school teacher, and her mother taught 1st grade. My grandfather was a principal for many years before substitute teaching, and one of his sons taught English in Taiwan for over a decade. Needless to say, teaching is part of my DNA. It is incredibly fulfilling when a student "gets it," and that's always my aim. I am an encourager, but encouragement isn't just about saying "good job." It's about speaking courage into someone and making them realize that they are capable of more than they think--this is my aim. I have a degree in mathematics with a minor in applied piano, and I am available for both mathematics tutoring and music theory tutoring as well as piano lessons.

About the lesson

I give students a holistic approach so they understand the mechanisms behind theories and equations and craft, be it mathematics or music. As a left-brained creative, I see the harmony between the imagination and logic, and because of this, am able to show students the fun in finding patterns and sequences and applying it to be successful in problem-solving and creating. My lessons will begin with a brief overview of the subject, making complex nomenclature simplified and relevant to their level of knowledge. I will take them through their homework or lesson plan at a step by step basis until they truly understand. You don't teach a subject; you teach students. I'd rather a student understand 100% of one thing than understand 10% of 10 things. This teaches them how to think so they can begin to figure things out on their own. My lessons will work for kindergarten through high school age.
