About Yojiro
YOJIRO ICHIKAWA is a theatre director, vocal coach, and an actor trained at Arts Educational Schools London, Drama Centre London, Complicité, New York Theatre Workshop, and Lincoln Center Theater.
He has worked as Vocal Consultant/Vocal Supervisor in many productions including RSC’s My Neighbour Totoro (Barbican Theatre), Allegiance (Charing Cross Theatre), Titanic (Japan Tour), Tell Me on a Sunday (New National Theatre Tokyo) and Tinker Bell in Shoji-land (Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre).
He has also worked as Principal Puppeteer on the RSC’s My Neighbour Totoro (Barbican Theatre), as Dramaturg on Your Lie in April (Theatre Royal Drury Lane, Harold Pinter Theatre), as Performer on Death Note (London Palladium, Lyric Theatre), and Performer in Marco Polo the musical (Shaw Theatre).
His directing credits include Tell Me On A Sunday (New National Theatre Tokyo, Yomiuri Drama Award), The View Upstairs (Nihon Seinenkan Hall Tokyo, Odajima Drama Translation Award), Pariah, The Soldier’s Tale (Chautauqua Theater Company), Letter from the Sea (Teatr Polski Bydgoszcz, Poland & New National Theatre Tokyo), Ordinary Days (The Access Theater, New York & Bridewell Theatre), and John & Jen (Yomiuri Otemachi Hall Tokyo). He is a recipient of the 2025 Drama League Directors Project.

Yojiro Ichikawa is a professional musical theatre performer, director, and vocal coach with experience across the UK, the US, and Japan. Drawing on his work in major productions including My Neighbour Totoro, Allegiance, Titanic, Tell Me on a Sunday, and Tinker Bell in Shoji-Land, he helps singers and actors develop vocal technique, storytelling, and performance skills.
Trained in a wide range of vocal styles—from musical theatre, pop, and rock to classical singing—Yojiro tailors each session to the individual needs and goals of his students, whether they are preparing for auditions, working on a role, or simply singing for enjoyment.
His teaching combines vocal technique with principles from the Alexander Technique, helping students recognise and release unnecessary tension, improve physical awareness, and discover a freer, more natural voice. By developing greater awareness of how the body works, students can sing with more ease, freedom, and confidence.
Over the years, Yojiro has helped students prepare for successful auditions for drama schools, youth theatre programmes, and theatre productions. His coaching focuses not only on vocal technique, but also on storytelling, confidence, and authentic performance.
Yojiro also offers coaching in Japanese pronunciation for those interested in singing Anime, J-Pop, or Japanese musical theatre repertoire, helping students perform songs with greater accuracy and understanding.
Students of all ages and experience levels are welcome, from complete beginners to working professionals.
