About Laura

If you are struggling with essay writing and need to achieve higher grades, I can help you. Through my hybrid tutoring-editing method, I can show you how to maximise the structure of your ideas and use academic language for clarity and power. Alternatively, if you need support with planning as well as improving your essay, my short-term coaching sessions may be what you need (see below).

My background

I’m an English specialist, but I can help with any written subject. I have a Master’s in English and a ten-year career teaching in three London schools. I’m also CELTA-qualified, and use this training to help learners whose first language is not English.

In my MA and final undergraduate year I consistently achieved more than 70 in all my essays. My dissertation was awarded 79 and one essay an 83. Consequently, I earned a 1st class BA, and a Distinction in my MA. I received three top A grades at A Level in essay-based subjects (English, RE and History).

As an English teacher in a secondary school, I have marked dozens - hundreds! - of essays, helping GCSE and A Level students to improve their work and boost their grades. I’ve also worked as an editor of exam materials for a major UK exam board, and am experienced at reconfiguring writing for maximum impact and clarity.

I’m positive and kind, and will always aim to boost your confidence in your academic work.

Tutoring-editing

I can read dissertations and essays (undergraduate, postgraduate, A Level or IB), highlighting strengths as well as areas that lack clarity. We will then workshop improvements to sentences or paragraphs, and you will be able to work on any remaining sections independently using my clear instructions and advice.

Study coaching

Short-term coaching sessions may be what you need to help you through an important study period. If you are procrastinating and feeling overwhelmed, I provide study support to help you break down your tasks, create accountability as well as the motivation to complete them. This may be particularly valuable for those with ADHD, ASD or dyslexia. I have a full understanding of how neurodivergence affects study skills, and strategies to support it. I taught for one year in a specialist school, along with many more young people in mainstream schools. Coaching is also useful for those with anxiety about deadlines or low academic confidence.

About the lesson

Both tutoring-editing and study coaching are £20 per hour.

Proofreading is an additional service I offer, for the same hourly price. For full guarantee that your work is error-free, I can proofread the finished version and check citations are correct, too.

For ESOL/EFL students whose first language is not English, I offer a ‘proofreading +’ service, which highlights unnatural phrasing or word choices in addition to checking for grammatical and punctuation errors.

£20 p/h is the price for my time, so I will do as much as I can within this time depending on your budget and aims.

For example, if your budget is £40 for a 2,000-word essay, I can spend 1 hour making notes and we can have a 1-hour online session making improvements together. Or if you have a 5,000-word essay but would like an overall review of its structure and effectiveness, a 30-minute session and then a ‘proofread+’ for native-level precision, this would be £90 (£40+£10+£40).

I will look at all work before offering a quote, as it depends on the length of the essay and how complete it is.

Coaching is also £20 per hour.
