Background and experience

After a successful career in property research in London, the study of martial arts took me to Japan for twelve years, where I taught English at the YMCA language school in Kyoto, then Politics and Study Skills at undergraduate and postgraduate levels at a number of Japanese universities. I have taught students as young as five and as old as sixty five, individually, in small groups and large cohorts. On returning to the UK I worked first with the long term unemployed improving their job prospects. Since 2008 I have worked at the University of Leeds, supporting students, researchers and staff to enhance learning, teaching and research, both face to face and through developing online resources. I completed a PhD in Japanese Studies at the University of Manchester and now work primarily supporting postdoctoral researchers and fellows at Imperial College London.

Other skills and interests

I speak fluent Japanese, Japanese Proficiency Test, Level 2, 2003. I have international travel experience, both as solo traveller and as a group leader for student field trips to Paris, Venice the USA and Canada; I completed a solo 1100km cycle tour in the heat and humidity of a Japanese summer; and I relocated from Japan to the UK without boarding a plane. Teaching and learning in the martial arts is the focus of my PhD research.
