I would usually start from previous knowledge. It's best when there's a connection between when is being learned and what has been learnt and is in the long term memory. I also use questions and answers a lot to get the student very expressive. Since English is an everyday language, it helps faster retention and consistent usage leading to proficiency - the end goal.
