Worthy of note is also the fact that as an accountant, you are not limited only to private business organisations, you can work in public/government sectors and non-profit organisations - As a matter of fact, all organisations need an accountant when all is said and done! Accounting also helps build your analytical skills and in the world of today where everything is going digital, you gain some technical skills too, getting accustomed to the several tools available to aid accounting.
Oh, and do not forget the very important matter - Accountants and Auditors, especially of the chartered kind, do also earn some pretty cool cash in the right environment.
Professional Qualifications for Accounting
Although the two professional bodies aforementioned; ICAN and ACCA are the most common and known bodies in Nigeria, it should be noted that according to Nigerian Law there and of the three approved accounting professional bodies, only ICAN is formally approved by the government of Nigeria. The other two approved bodies by Nigerian Law are the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN) and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA).
It is also worthy to note that although ACCA is not recognised by Nigerian law, it is widely accepted and in fact, there are a lot of Nigerian firms that ask for this accreditation alongside ICAN.
Let's now look a bit into what the professional qualifying bodies for accounting in Nigeria are about.
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN)
ICAN is the first and most widely recognised Nigerian professional body. It was established by the Act of Parliament on September 1st, 1965 and as of 31st May 2020, ICAN has in excess of 50,000 professional members and a great number of aspirant students on its Register.
In other to be eligible to become a student of ICAN, an applicant must have a minimum qualifying university or polytechnic degree or their equivalent. Students must pass the professional examination to become eligible for candidacy for member induction.
To be inducted as a member of the institute, an inductee with an accounting degree must have at least three years (36 months) of work experience while an inductee with any other degree (non-accounting) must have at least four years (48 months) of work experience amongst other terms and conditions.
Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN)
ANAN though not as recognised as its predecessor was the only other Nigerian accredited professional body asides from ICAN until 2010. It was established on January 1st,1979, incorporated on September 28th, 1983, and was finally chartered by Decree on August 25th, 1993.
Unlike ICAN whose eligibility to become a student and then an inducted member is open to those who can pass the examination and other criteria, ANAN is more specific.
First of all, ANAN has a certified training arm - The Nigerian College of Accountancy; Registered students must go through 9 months of intense training after and pass the professional exams, After this training, students must also take a mandatory accounting in training (AIT) program before gaining the eligibility to become a member inductee.
To be inducted as a member of the institute, an inductee with an accounting degree must have at least three years (36 months) of work experience. ANAN inductees without accounting degrees must go through a Conversion program for nine (9) months after which they must write and pass eight courses.
It should also be noted that only Undergraduate degree holders from specific disciplines known as 'allied' courses can be considered for the conversion course. these allied courses are Economics, Business Administration, Management, and Banking and finance. Any other degree holders outside the allied courses and of course Accounting cannot be qualified to become ANAN members.
Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) - Nigerian Chapter.
CIMA is a global organisation and perhaps the world's largest body of professional accountants was founded in the UK in 1919; it is recognised in about 176 countries.
The Nigerian chapter of CIMA was founded in 1977, registered as a body in 1985, and incorporated in 1989. The bill seeking to establish CIMA was finally passed by the Nigerian Senate on November 4th, 2010.
There are four membership levels for CIMA Nigeria (Fellow, Associate, Graduate, Licentiate) and they all have their various requirements. Check the CIMA Nigeria website for more details.
Association of Chartered Accountant (ACCA)
ACCA is a global body for professional accountants and it was founded in 1904 with its headquarters in London UK.
Though ACCA is not recognised by Nigerian Law as a professional body, it is very much widely accepted in Nigeria at the same level as ICAN. It also has the advantage of being more recognised and accepted in other countries so you find some accountants opting to go for ACCA qualifications instead of ICAN and we also have cases where an individual has the two qualifications.
Eligibility for ACCA membership requires students to go through three elements which include the ACCA qualifying exams, an Ethics and Professional Skills module, and a practical experience requirement of 36 months (3 years).
Other Notable Accounting bodies in Nigeria are:
- The Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Nigeria (ICPAN), which was established in May 1988 and became a corporate body on May 6th, 1996.
- Chartered Institute of Cost and Management Accountants - Nigeria (CICMA), which was was founded as the Association of Cost and Management Accountants in 2003 and changed its name in 2004 for the purpose of getting the enabling Act for the institute.
