The biggest technical challenge to sending astronauts on farther and longer missions is biomedical: How do we keep them healthy?
There has been a drastic change in the way things are been done within the 20th and 21st centuries due to the changes that have taken place in science and technology.
Biological Engineering is seen as an interdisciplinary area of study that focuses on applying engineering principles to analyze different biological systems and solve different problems. This involves interfacing such systems like animals, plants, or microbes with human-designed machines, processes, structures, and instrumentation.
The world had really moved ahead as a result of improvement in technology. Humans had successfully sent rockets into space, developed telescopes that have succeeded in seeing telescopes in far-away galaxies, developed easier and effective ways to treat sicknesses with the aid of modern technology, and provides us with the opportunity to communicate with our friends, business partners, and loved ones living in different parts of the world!
Of a truth, modern technology has done a lot for us.
Due to this innovation in different study areas, biological engineering, also known as bio-engineering, is also seen as an academic discipline changing the narratives in modern society and getting popular in Nigeria. Bioengineering utilizes biological systems in the creation of usable and economically viable products in society.
In today’s article, Superprof will help interested students to know some of the basic information and description of what Bioengineering entails. We would also show you some of the reputable universities in Nigeria where you can study Biological Engineering and the available work opportunities for individuals who study this engaging and timely course.
What Really Is Biological Engineering
Most people get really confused when they hear the term biological engineering for the first time since this is not the everyday course for university students.
There are different types of biologists and biological courses one can study at the university. To help bring you to speed to what the term rightly means, we would briefly analyze what the concept of biological engineering really is and the task of a biological engineer.
Bioengineering is an interdisciplinary course that applies the principles of engineering and designs and the analysis of biological systems and biomedical technologies. The biological revolution in recent years has continued to improve and impact all of us. Human-based gene manipulation has now affected nearly all areas of Nigerian food supplies.
Plants and animals are now being defined on a molecular basis. Living organisms can now be measured, analyzed, and engineered as never before. Biotechnology devices include disease diagnostic devices, medical imaging technology, tissue engineering organs, and bacteria engineered to produced chemicals.
These changes and devices have continuously redefined our research and graduate programs at the University. To do well in the field of biological technology, students in the Universities are trained on the fundamentals of biology and engineering. There are also trained in the field of material science, chemistry, and computer science.
The job of a biological engineer differs from one job-to-another and can be intriguing. These bioengineers are known in different economic sectors as scientists, design engineers, clinical engineers, or biomedical engineers.
These professionals perform different tasks such as
- Conducting up-to-date researches in other to solve clinical problems
- Arranging clinical trials in relation to new medical products and medical devices
- Making use of computer software to design, develop and test new devices, materials, and equipment
- Development of energy-efficient technologies that can support year-round local vegetable production and the production of high-value chemicals such as pharmaceuticals from plants
- The generation of bioelectricity from waste products using microbial fuel cells
- Attending seminars to keep to date on the newest innovation and technological advancement
- Writing reports about observation and researches conducted.
Interested individuals in this field of study need to know that biological engineering jobs can take place in a workshop, a laboratory, a clinic, or in an office.
To be highly successful as a biological engineer, some important skills need to be developed and honed.
Here are some of the best skills one needs to develop as a biological engineer
- Ability to pay attention to details
- A love for biology and engineering
- Great problem-solving skills
- Ability to work under pressure
- Excellent communication skills that will aid you in sharing your research finding with people from different background
- Ability to combine creativity and technical knowledge.
Why Should I Study Biological Engineering?
Natural species are the library from which genetic engineers can work. Genetic engineers don’t make new genes, they rearrange existing ones.

Bioengineering is the course for the future! It is the ideal course for individuals seeking to get involved with innovative ways of doing things. The study of bioengineering is on the rise. It’s important for people seeking to find solutions to the many problems besieging our world, such as within the agricultural and chemical industry.
The following are some of the reasons why you should study bioengineering as a course of study at the university level.
- You are sure of employment: The job need of a bioengineer is on the rapid increase due to their expertise for the technological improvement in medical technology. Due to the increase in the need for this skill-set, individuals who possess a degree in this field will never be out of work. It also allows you to choose the best job for them.
- Crete different Implants: With bioengineering knowledge, you can design different implants for impaired people around. Your knowledge of biology and engineering can be useful in creating state-of-the-art technology for disabled patients.
- Make a difference: You have the opportunity of making a great difference in the world. You are trained to find a practical solution to the rise in life complex problems. You can create life-changing and saving technologies such as different kinds of hospital equipment, new stimulators, and inventing revolutionary drug delivery methods.
