Why Should You Study History?

Besides being an interesting and educative course to study, the subject has additional benefits that will prove helpful in your life. Unlike popular opinion, Historians are very productive in the job market. So ditch the advice of naysayers and study what you love. Below are some of the many advantages of studying this course at the undergraduate level.

If you've ever wondered why you're not a good speaker or writer, the reason might be your indifference towards History. While studying for a History degree, you will take surveys, write research papers and thesis, and present seminars, debates, and lectures. These activities would help to improve your writing and speaking skills, thereby improving your oratory and writing proficiency.

This academic subject also teaches you academic research, observation, and subjective and objective critiquing of events. A historian isn't an average thinker neither is he a believer of fallacious statements. Instead, he is a critical thinker who alludes to the past to analyze the present and project the future.

Furthermore, knowing history helps you avoid repeating past mistakes that were once made. Great political leaders are either historians or have advisers who are. Either you're a political leader or an ordinary civilian, there's a wealth of knowledge in history. The past helps to shape the present.

Some of the world's most influential leaders have a Bachelor of Arts degree in History. They include George Bush, Prince Henry of Cambridge, and the former Prime Minister of Britain Gordon Brown.

Beyond Your Career: The Additional Functions of History

If you believe you need this degree just to get a job and pay your bills, you’re wrong! You can do more. Besides the obvious benefits scholars derive from studying History, History is applicable to our world.

History improves decision making. In George Santayana’s words, “Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it.” This means that knowing the past helps you avoid repeating past mistakes, thereby improving the decisions you make. A perfect example is Nigeria’s judiciary system.

Additionally, it helps you understand yourself. Knowing your origin gives you a deeper meaning of who you are. Reading about how Nigeria gained her independence in 1960 will give the adjective “Nigerian” a different meaning. Knowing that Nigeria was colonised by Britain will explain why the English language is your L2. Reading about the coup d’etat in Nigeria would explain why Nigeria holds elections and practices democracy. All of these would help you better understand yourself, your culture, and nation.
