From time immemorial, drawing has been revered as a unique form of expressing emotions. An artists ability to portray life with the magical use of a pencil is thrilling, yet daunting. However, drawing artistically requires practise and tutelage. And for this reason, you should consider taking drawing tutorials.

Understanding digital art is easier when you have the basic knowledge of landscape rendering, colour theory, and figure drawing. Taking drawing tutorials is tantamount to becoming a better artist. If you're interested in pencil drawing or other forms of drawing classes, Lagos is the place to be. So, take drawing lessons in Lagos today.

Being Nigeria's largest city, Lagos state is the home of craftworks, cultural artefacts, museum, and creative works. The city of Lagos offers a wide range of art galleries and prestigious art schools. If you intend taking drawing classes, then Lagos is where you want to be. The city is known for its energetic vibe and bubbling nightlife. Besides taking drawing lessons, there's so much more you can do.

"Drawing is the artist's most direct and spontaneous expression, a species of writing: it reveals, better than does painting, his true personality."

– Edgar Degas, French Artist.

Black Fragrance School of Design (BFSD)

Being Africas most comprehensive design college, the Black Fragrance School of Design offers quality training, job opportunities, and enterprise development. With an array of art courses, the design school aims to cover the major aspects of drawing and digital art. They offer several courses.

The Drawing &Illustration course (DRAW1) offered by BFSD covers drawing techniques, contour drawing, negative and positive space, and perspective (one and two-point perspective drawing). They have expert tutors who would help you have a deeper understanding of art.

This free but mandatory course is taken along with another course offered by the school. In a bid to promote art, they have year-round drawing classes that span for three months. This course is best suited for beginners with little or no drawing experience. If you are a pro, there are other art courses that will suit your profile.

DRAW1 covers the basic elements of art such as value, texture, colour, line, shape, and volume. These basic elements will then be manipulated for different types of compositions, spatial illusion, and expressions.

Students would use shading (cross-hatching, cross contour, stippling, and continuous tones) to describe the light-form relationship and the illusion of depth and volume. Depicting organic rhythms and texture from landscape and still-life objects is another amazing lesson to be learnt in this course. Because its a beginner-level course, only one and two-point perspectives will be taught.

Although classical drawing still exists, technology has made digital drawing possible. Digital drawing involves the use of graphics software for drawing. Contrary to using a pen and paper, digital artists use a tablet or a computer. BFSD offers graphic design and animation courses in case you're uninterested in the drawing course. The animation course covers 2-D and 3-D animations which will help sharpen your creative story-telling and movie production skills.

It is only by drawing often, drawing everything, drawing incessantly, that one fine day you discover, to your surprise, that you have rendered something in its true character.

– Camille Pissarro, Danish-French Painter.

Art Splash Studio

If you are in Lagos or Abuja and you love painting, eating, and sipping on cocktails all at once, then Art Splash is for you. This studio offers a Paint Nite class where tutors will put you through painting your artwork. The amazing thing about a place like this is that its a learn-to-draw for beginners class because no prior experience is required.

Although there are many drawing tutorials in Lagos, the Art Splash Studio stands out from the rest. Here, a portrait is placed at a distance and then beginners are asked to paint what they see. While the painting session is ongoing, tutors are assigned to assist them with the drawing process. You can also put up your work for sale on their page. While some paintings go for ₦3,500, others are sold for ₦5,000.

If you are a professional artist, you will need a more technical drawing class. Keep on reading to find out what you need.

The power of nature is such that its what all art strives to be. The more we can get in tune with the harmony of the planet, the more our art can benefit from that relationship.
