Drawing is cherished by all but known by only a few. The misconception that drawing is for a selected few has deterred many from attempting it. Although some are willing to learn, they often encounter unskilled art teachers while others experience unfavourable teaching settings.

Besides the conspicuous benefits of drawing, putting pen to paper also helps you develop introspection, close observation, and patience. During an era where political chaos and technology dominate our existence, the aforementioned vital attributes will always come in handy. Sketching, diagramming, doodling, and drawing are problem-solving tools solely because they help you visualize ideas.

The famous city of Abuja, being one of Nigeria’s wealthiest, offers you with an array of professional art and drawing lessons. Drawing lessons in Abuja vary in duration, price, and expertise, so we’ve compiled a list of the very best drawing schools Abuja has to offer. For non-Abuja residents, Superprof has a Nigeria wide drawing course guide.

If you’re a beginner or a pro artist, this article covers a mix of Abuja drawing tutorials that would fit your level of expertise. Let’s get started!

Drawing on the spot is the easiest way to learn to draw the figure. It's not contour drawing in the traditional sense of not looking at the drawing, but to look and draw on the spot is very helpful.

American International School of Abuja

The American International School of Abuja is a goal-driven and dream-achieving school that offers skill acquisition courses to students. If you’re an adult, then this school isn’t for you as it’s a drawing for kids class. AISA uses the United States curriculum and its classes are strictly designed for preschool to SS3 students.

Annual standardized tests are carried out to assess the education quality received by the students. Besides Math, Social Studies, Science, and English, students take Visual and Performing Arts classes, and Design Technology classes.

Their art program begins with a creative experimentation process which then transforms into a problem-solving skill that’s applicable to all fields of learning. Besides taking only drawing classes, African Art History, Life Drawing, and Graphic Design have all been incorporated into the curriculum. For JSS 1-3 students, they’ve transcended beyond art to creating dialogue-based stories. So, if you want your kid to learn art alongside other core subjects, AISA is a valid option.

“The process of drawing is, before all else, the process of putting the visual intelligence into action, the very mechanics of visual thought. Unlike painting and sculpture it is the process by which the artist makes clear to himself, and not to the spectator, what he is doing. It is a soliloquy before it becomes communication”.

Michael Ayerton, English Artist and Writer.

Advancement in technology has made business somewhat difficult for artists who focus on solely drawing or those who intend to learn drawing. That’s why many artists have added digital drawing, graphic design and animation to their arsenal. BiZmarro is a digital training centre that doesn’t focus on traditional pencil drawing but digital drawing. Their Adobe Illustrator course is designed for artists and graphic designers. Here, you can learn to draw in digital form.

If you’re not interested in their Adobe Illustrator course, they offer 3D animation and modelling training. For this course, you’ll use Autodesk Maya and Cinema 4D. Furthermore, you will learn modelling, how to animate scenes, add lighting and texture. These skills would help you become a professional and marketable animator.

The different industries that make use of 3D tools include game design, multimedia, animation, broadcast, architecture, digital sculpting, interior design, and 3D printing. In a country like Nigeria where 3D animation isn’t as popular as medicine and law, learning this skillset can earn you a living from wherever you are provided you’ve got internet access and the system spec required.

The course includes learning polygonal modelling, sculpting, creating meshes, and NURBS modelling. Texture, reflectivity, and surface colouring are other things you’ll learn. For rendering, you’ll learn depth-of-field, lighting, and camera setup. Another school that offers similar digital drawing service is discussed in our Ibadan drawing school guide.

“Practice by drawing things large, as if equal in representation and reality. In small drawings every large weakness is easily hidden; in the large, the smallest weakness is easily seen”.

Leon Battista Alberti, Italian Author.

Art Splash Studio

If you’re an Abuja resident and love cocktail-sipping, painting, and eating, then this is the studio for you. Here, you have the opportunity of attending a Paint Nite Class, an art session where tutors would guide you on sketching. They also offer drawing courses in Lagos.

It’s an amazing experience because it is a learn-to-draw for beginners class where no prior drawing experience is required. The session involves placing a portrait for beginner artists to attempt painting. While the sketching session is going on, tutors inspect to ensure you’re on the right path.

You also have the opportunity to upload your paintings on their website for pre-order. Each painting ranges between ₦3,500 and ₦5,000. If you’re a pro artist, you’ll need something more intensive and technical. Keep on reading to discover what you need.

Black Fragrance School of Design (BFSD)

BFSD offers a drawing & illustration course which covers cross-hatching, continuous tones, and stippling to explain depth illusion and light-form relationship. Although drawing still exists, it’s been discovered that many artists change careers, thus moving on to pursue a career in animation. This course covers animation techniques like object animation, pixilation, and frame-by-frame animation.

As a student of this course, you will begin with the digital and traditional techniques used in claymation, stop-motion, 2D and 3D animation. With time, basic animation mechanics and theory will be studied, and you’ll develop your drawing and observational skills while focusing on the fundamental principles of layout, storyboarding, and character design.

For 3D classes, specialized software like Autodesk Maya and Studio-Max are used for animation and rendering. Before taking this course, however, students must have completed the 2D course in order to have an understanding of the twelve basic principles of animation. Other software like Adobe Flash CS6, Adobe Premiere CS6, and Apple Remote Desktop will be taught.

"My drawings inspire and are not to be defined. They determine nothing. They place us, as does music, in the ambiguous world of the undetermined. They are a kind of metaphor".

Odilon Redon, French Paintmaker and Symbolist Painter.

Strategically situated at Wuse, the Thought Pyramid Gallery is one of Nigeria's finest galleries that celebrate African contemporary and modern art. Having coined its name from the famous Egyptian pyramid, it draws allusion to the origin of Western civilization. TPG aims at professionally housing and preserving art, a practice synonymous with developed countries.

Besides housing art, they also offer drawing classes for kids and art exhibitions. Finding pencil drawing tutors has become difficult as digital art has begun dominating the art world. If you've got kids, this may be an art class to look out for. For those living outside of Abuja, you can check our Port-Harcourt guide or Kano drawing school guide.
