Obtaining A Diploma In France

I am sure you are aware that the French education system consists of three stages as we have in Nigeria: primary education, secondary education, and higher education.

The curriculum in France at primary and secondary schools is standardized across all schools like here in Nigeria. This is why regardless of the secondary school you attend in Nigeria, you can sit for the WAEC, JAMB OR GCE examinations.

Once you have your French baccalauréat or bac “en Poche” equivalent to our own WAEC and GCE (literally, ‘in your pocket’), French teenagers are eligible to apply to any university of their choice.

Diplomas are given to those who complete a program of study at a technical school or community college. Most students go on to better jobs and higher education once they earn their diplomas.

Collège loosely corresponds to our secondary school framework. Pupils start their studies at this higher level at around 11 years old. At this stage of their education, they are exposed to secondary course materials that will prepare them for higher education.

In France, students will be directed either to further studies in a Lycée, or towards a more technical path, culminating in a brevet.

Lycée students spend three years preparing for their baccalaureate exam, which is roughly equivalent to GCE or WAEC in Nigeria.

The French BAC more or less corresponds to our GCE or WAEC

After the lycée, students can then choose to pursue either a vocational diploma or an academic diploma.

Vocational diplomas: These are like technology degrees in Nigeria like OND and HND.

The DUT (diplôme universitaire de technologie) and BTS (brevet de technicien supérieur) are two-year technology-oriented degrees. BTS courses are offered by high schools, whereas DUT is awarded by universities.

Academic diplomas: There are three types in France: universities, Grandes écoles, and specialized schools.

If you are following what is being discussed, you should by now already have an overview of how intricate the French education system is.

Now, let us focus on the type of schools international students should start applying to in France. Public universities are commonly and usually advised.
