So you have decided to learn how to speak the French Language, and the next question that comes to your mind, is how long will it take me to start speaking it fluently?

Unfortunately, there is no one answer to this question. Learning a new language requires effort and time. How long it will take you to learn is dependent on so many factors and many of such factors are the number of hours you dedicate to practising and learning.

It is no news that many Nigerians are interested in learning a foreign language and French is number one on the list.

This is the reason that there are many French schools to take French lessons in Nigeria. If there was no market for the language then a lot of locals and international people would not be making investments in establishing language schools in the country.

Each school, of course, has a time frame for the classes they have available to the public, whether you are a beginner, intermediate, or advanced learner.

French is the sixth most widely spoken language in the world with over 220 million French speakers worldwide. Learning a language like French is an amazing process, and every stage of it can be very fulfilling with the right tutor, training materials and the number of hours you invest in learning and practising. No matter your age, educational background, skill level, learning to speak another language like French has a lot of personal, professional and career benefits.

It’s no surprise why many Nigerians want to learn French. Many of our primary and secondary schools teach the language, and so many Nigerians are already familiar with some French words which makes the learning process much easier for someone who is not even familiar at all with the subject.

It is said that bilinguals find it easier to learn a third language and for a fact, many Nigerians are already bilinguals. We have over 520 languages in Nigeria which gives room for people to speak the English language and also their dialect. This in a way makes a lot of  Nigerians bilingual in nature.

We have already experienced studying foreign grammar, memorizing vocabulary, listening to different sounds and looking at different letters,(all educated Nigerians go through this process because we learn the English language has a subject in our primary and secondary schools)  then your mind knows what to expect when faced with a new language.

By the way, if you want to learn French quickly and at a reasonable price, I recommend you contact one of the French tutors on Superprof Nigeria.

Number Of Hours To Learn French

If you’re serious about learning French, here’s what you should know: everyone’s experience is different.

According to a study on French learners, it was learnt that it might take an English speaker approximately 23-24 weeks or 575-600 hours of study to become proficient in the French language. Of course, this is just a study and it does not apply to all possible French learners. If you already have some basic knowledge of the language, then your french learning experience might be easier.

To be very honest, it is impossible to know how many hours it will take for you to become fluent in French. However, as French teachers or any polyglot will tell you, French a global language that is one of the easiest to learn. Some factors can influence how fast you can learn French or any language such as:

  • Your previous language learning experience
  • The time dedicated to the learning process
  • The number of hours you invest in practising
  • Your passion for learning
  • The reason you want to learn the language
  • How you are learning: with a school, self-taught or with a private tutor - The school or private tutor you enrol with will give you an estimated time frame you will become fluent in the language.
  • Your attitude towards the learning process
  • Your budget
  • Your motivation
  • Learning resources available to you

Ways to learn French fast and fluently

According to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and as seen on Alliance Française de Lagos, there are six levels of French (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2).

The A1 is for the basic user, the B category is for the intermediate category and the C category is for the Fluent category. Each level will take about 120 hours - 180 hours to learn. You can enrol for the level that best suits your current level of French understanding.

There are so many free resources, apps and videos online you can use to aid your learning process minus enrolling in a french school or hiring a private tutor. If you’re driven, excited and hungry to master French, you’ll be fluent in no time.

While learning the language and working on your French accent, you can use the free audio resources available on the internet (eg Youtube) to get the right pronunciations of the words and accent marks you are learning.

Do not restrict yourself only to what your private tutor and teacher in school are teaching you. The more you practice on your own, the faster your learning process. You can also spend your free time watching news, movies and Tv series in the French language to improve your vocabulary.

Always remind yourself why you want to learn French, how it will improve your life and everything good that can come from learning. This can help you stay motivated and, therefore, speed up the time needed to learn it.

Components of Learning French

The amount of time you spend learning is one of the most important factors in language acquisition. There are, however, several other components you’ll have to take into account when learning a language. One of such is the price comparison between the different types of courses you're likely to encounter.

The amount it will cost in learning the language will greatly affect your learning process. Taking French courses at a university or through private lessons with a native French speaker will result in a much quicker understanding of the language than through self-teaching methods.

A French-language school or tutor won’t just guide you to your desired level of French, but it will also help you appreciate French culture and history.

The biggest challenges you might face while learning the language would be French grammar and pronunciation. This is why there are four main points you should consider to learn french successfully and they are:

  1. French grammar
  2. French pronunciation
  3. French vocabulary
  4. French verb conjugations

If you’re lucky enough to live in France or any French-speaking country, it may be easier to achieve speaking French fluently in a short amount of time. Some people say that beginners can become fluent in one year, but you know that depends on how interested you are in learning the language.

Many people live in France and other French-speaking countries and cannot speak or understand the language talkless of being fluent.

You can consider moving to a french speaking country to enable you to speak better and fluently. A French course or tutor might teach you about French pronunciation or French conversation, however, no language course can teach you better than your ears. You will learn new words and phrases daily just as a product of living in a French-speaking country.

In a nutshell, you need to be proficient in reading, writing, listening, and speaking to be considered fluent.

Remember, you don't need to be fluent to be able to speak a foreign language and to be comfortable interacting in that language. So do not put pressure on yourself. Just enjoy the process and in no time, you will become better.

You can and will be able to interact in French long before you're fluent. Get one of the best French tutors in Nigeria on www.superprof.ng.
