Teaching people how to dance involves putting lots of things in place. First, you have to carefully plan out your lessons, from the music to the dance styles, techniques, and dancing equipment.

Different dance styles require specific dance materials. Whether ballet, choreography, contemporary or traditional African dance, they all require specific materials. As a private tutor in need of help on how to go about planning dance classes, you can join the Superprof Nigeria platform and sign up to be a tutor so students who need your services can contact you.

The platform will point you in the right direction with everything you'll require when preparing for your dance classes.

So, what should a tutor put together before organising a dance lesson?

A lot of plans go into teaching and learning the art of dancing. This is irrespective of whether you teach at a dance school, dance academy, university, or even private lessons.

You need to have some dance resources and equipment and be familiar with them when making your dance lesson plans. But, of course, this depends on the students you're taking (children, teens, or adults).

You'll require a lot of things for your dance classes. They might be online resources or physical equipment. Be sure to carry each student on how much accessing these things costs. Online resources are also for people in Nigeria, not only overseas.

The good thing about using online resources is that it helps you gain more exposure as a dancer.

Suppose you're trying to teach your students a particular dance style, for example, ballet, and you're not sure about a specific movement. In that case, you can always refer to ballet videos available online.

Here's how to determine your price as a dance tutor.

When you do this, you might even discover something new in watching these videos that could be useful to your students.

Let's go

Dance Location

Before starting any dance tutorial, the very first you should prepare for is the location to use for your dance classes. This might be a little demanding but very necessary. The location you'll be using for your dance classes is an essential factor to consider as a dance tutor. This will help you work well with your students in a conducive environment.

Different dance styles require a specific location. Some locations that you can use for dancing include; a dance studio, an empty classroom in a school, a dance hall, and an open space. You need to know how comfortable these places are for your students.

While some dancers already have their own space, some might have to pay to get a dance studio or a place for their dance lesson within a scheduled time. Also, feel free to add the cost to your teaching fee.

The location you'll require for each dance lesson is dependent on the number of students you're teaching. The larger the class, the larger the space you'll be needing.

The proximity of the dance lesson location to you and yu students is also essential when picking a location. You must be able to work out a place within the neighbourhood and not too far away.

If you're a dance  tutor and you don't have a space of your own, you can check out the following places:

  • Dance studios
  • Dance schools/academies
  • An open space

Dance Outfits and Accessories

When dancing, you can't just put on any outfit you want. There are specific outfits and accessories that you'll require for dancing. Also, have it in mind that different dance styles require specific outfits.

Imagine stumbling on your cloth while dancing in the middle of practice. That could be embarrassing, and we're sure you don't want that. However, you can avoid this by sticking to the appropriate dance attire.

As a dancer, wearing the appropriate dance outfits will make you confident while dancing.

Dancing outfits are not for the dance tutor alone, but also the students. Let each student know what outfit they will be needing and how much it will cost to get it. You can also decide to sell the required outfit types to them. This is easier and also enhances uniformity.

Like we've said earlier, different dance style requires specific outfits. For instance, someone learning ballet is not expected to wear a sneaker to a ballet class.

Here are some dance outfits that are often used during dance training

Dance Clothes

  • Clothes for contemporary dance: This dance usually requires loose-fitting tops, leggings, tights, and shorts. You can wear these outfits when learning Salsa, Zumba, gym-based dances, and hip pop.
  • Ballet clothes: For ballet classes, you and your student can get a leotard, tights/ leggings, tutu (short ballet skirt). This makes ballet dancing easy, comfortable, and fun. You can also use a fitted top and pants as an alternative for the actual ballet outfit when practising.
  • Jazz clothes: Dance outfits for jazz are more relaxing than ballet. A fitted top and leggings are usually used for a jazz dance class. Other outfits you can wear include tights, leotards, spandex shorts, and socks for a jazz dance tutorial.
  • Tap clothes: A casual outfit will do the trick for a tap dance lesson. Just a regular fitted top and jazz pants are acceptable. Children learning the tap dance can wear any comfortable outfit as well.
  • African dance clothes: to make your students have fun and start with the right mood when learning the African dance, you can tell them to get an African Nigerian attire. For example, the females can wear an African fabric wrap worn around the waist. The males can get loose-fitting pants made from African fabric. You can decide to dress for example as a Yoruba person, depending on the song you are dancing to.

Here's how to execute your plans to become a dance tutor.

Dance Shoes

  • Dance sneakers: This is commonly used for most dance since it's very comfortable. You can wear sneakers when you want to learn dances like Salsa, Zumba, hip pop, and contemporary dances.
  • Ballet shoes: This shoe is a must-have for every student who wants to learn ballet dance steps. The shoes come with a pair of ribbons that you can tie around your legs. It also makes ballet dancing easier.
  • Ballroom shoes: These are usually used when practising or performing ballroom dances like American and Classical ballroom dance, etc.
  • Pointe shoes: This is an alternative to ballet shoes. It gives you a sense of feeling light while dancing. Pointe shoes help you balance, spin and stay on the tips of your toe for a long time while learning specific ballet dance steps.
  • Tap shoes: If you're teaching the tap dance, the tap shoe is a must-have. The tap shoe is always made with a hard sole with an attached metal part. This creates a tapping sound while dancing to make the tap dance effective.
  • Bare feet: The use of barefoot for dancing is usually associated with African and Nigerian dances. Almost all African dance involves the barefoot. It's one of the things that make African dances fun!

Other Equipment/Materials Useful for Dance Lessons

Dance resources and outfits are not the only things needed for dance training. There are other things needed as well. Some of these materials involve the following:

Music

Music is also one of the performing arts, and it is an essential aspect of dance as well. Every dance style has a piece of music that works well with it, irrespective of how new the dance could be.

The music help students flow easily into the dance, especially children, making it easier for them to learn to move their body, have fun and enjoy the dance lesson.

You will need these qualifications as a dance tutor.

Portable Bluetooth Speaker

This is a must-have for any dancer and dance tutor. This can be carried with you anywhere you go. It is one of the work tools needed in a dance lesson, and you can use it anywhere, whether in a dance studio, open space, or any other location for your dance lessons.

All you have to do is connect it to your phone and select a good song for the dance lesson from your phone.

Notebook and Pen

This is one of the essential tools needed to start learning anything. When taking your students through the theoretical aspect of dance, it is required that each student gets a notepad and pen.

With this, they will be able to take down important points that will do them a lot of good and help them learn the practical aspect of dancing.

Here are some things that will be useful after each dancing lesson or rigorous dance practice.

  • Bottle of water: After exhausting dance practice, you must have some water to keep you hydrated.
  • Snacks: Getting something to snack on is very important as it will help you recover after a dance lesson. At least for a while.
  • Towel: This is used to wipe out the sweat after dancing, before getting a shower at home.
  • Deodorant: After your dance class, it's normal to be all sweaty and smelly. After cleaning your sweat with your towel, you can use the deodorant to get rid of the sweat smell before taking a bath.

Therefore, you are ready to kickstart your dance tutoring career in Nigeria with all these tools or equipment in place!
