Having an excellent academic education is one of the good things parents want for their children. It's one of their greatest achievements, especially in Nigeria. This is why parents put their kids in schools that will help them achieve that as the year goes by till the end of their university studies.

The educational success of any child is in the hands of the parents, the family, teachers, schools, and also the government.

Teachers engage their students by teaching them new things, encouraging them to study and giving them classwork and take-home assignments. This will give them insight into new things when they study, which will help them engage their brain and think when working on a subject.

Every parent believes they are helping out by teaching their children how to solve their homework. But, understandably, they are doing this out of a pure heart intending to support, help their children study, and build a great relationship with their children.

We all know it's the parent's responsibility to guide their children when it comes to academic learning. However, there's a certain way and level to which parents can support and help their students with their school work.

When helping your children to study while doing their assignments, don't do their homework for them. Instead, help them in such a way that when they see similar problems or questions, they'll be able to do it independently and effectively.

This is what will help them right from their primary school up until the university level.

Also, parents can help their children by allowing their teachers to do their work instead of doubting them. Teachers are responsible for carrying their students through the learning process, one step at a time. This will help them do their classwork and homework without expecting their parents to do it for them.

Parents can also hire private teachers for quality educational engagement and improvement for their children.

Roles of Parents and Teachers to Support Children's Education

Like we said earlier, parents, family, teachers, schools and the government have a role to play in children's education. These bodies are responsible for giving children quality education, which moulds their academic life.

We'll be talking about the different roles that parents and teachers play in their children's education.

We know that parents play important roles in their children's education. However, parents don't have all it takes to help their children study when it comes to academics.

This is where the school comes in. After parents have accepted the fact that they need the help of a teacher for the educational welfare of their children, they should also let go of their children to be properly trained in school.

It seems some parents are still trying to take the place of a teacher in their children's education. This does not only make a child confused but also affects their learning process.

The role of parents is to enrol their children in school, pay for their tuition fee every school year and guide them on how they can solve their homework and study on their own instead of doing it for them.

Parents should acknowledge the fact that teachers have gone through a series of quality education and training to be qualified for the role. Some went to private universities some government universities and some colleges of education just to be qualified teachers.

The role of a teacher in the academic life of a student is very crucial, which could either mar or build a child. A teacher is a role model to their students and is responsible for how well a student learns as well as the student's engagement in class.

Teachers should be able to make research on things that can benefit their students and help them learn better. Students doing well in class is usually a great achievement for teachers.

It is also the responsibility of a teacher to teach their students in the language they understand, which could be storytelling or bringing an object representation of what will be taught in the class.

A teacher should build a great relationship with each student and make students have access to them when they need extra help. Teachers should also provide their students with the necessary learning resources that can help to build good learning habits.

Here's an article on academic support to cure the fault of education in Nigeria.

When Should Parents Stop Helping Their Children With Assignments?

We are not saying parents should not be involved in their children's education. On the contrary, it is very normal for parents or any other family member to be willing to aid their children with their school work.

Parental support in their children's education is usually in two ways, which determines if it will affect a child positively or negatively.

When teachers give their students homework, it is okay for parents or family members to want to help these children out especially if they're between the age of 2 and 6, which is fine. However, parents should do it in such a way that the child will be confident when the teacher calls him or her up the next day to solve the same question.

As time goes on, and children begin to move higher to the next phase of their academic training every year, parents should gradually let go of the habit of guiding their children on assignments. There's an age at which children are expected to be able to solve their assignment with little or no assistance, this could only be possible if the parent allows it.

When your child is approaching the age at which they are expected to be independent with their homework, there are some things you can do as a parent to be engaged in their educational affair:

  • Figure out the area and atmosphere where your child learns better
  • Buy them new books that they need for each academic year
  • Always remind them to check their notes for assignments
  • Avoid going up against your children's teachers, build a good relationship with them instead
  • Encourage healthy relationships between your children and their classmates, they learn better this way
  • Help them learn new things by making research for quality online resources that will aid their learning.
  • Make out time for them for some family bonding, and remind them that they have access to you at any time
  • Go out and spend some quality time with them as a family. Give them access to social life, this helps them relax their brain
  • Under no circumstances should you help your children do their homework, you should be their told model in that aspect
  • You can also get your children a private lesson teacher for a higher academic engagement in class.

Academic Support for Students

Academic support is a system used to help students get better in the course of learning. With academic support, students tend to learn new ways of dealing with questions which makes them better with school work.

Academic support is a great substitute for parental tuition since no parent can do the work of a teacher. So, academic support services provide students with the needed resources that will help them aim higher while learning.

Most schools now incorporate academic support into the school learning system, especially for students that are not doing well in class which they tag as 'extra lesson'.

Academic support is not only about the academic status of a child but also the physical, social and emotional well-being of a child. This is why extracurricular activities are included in the school learning system to boost the students' social engagement and relationships with each other.

Educational support comes in different forms which include the following:

  • Extra lessons at the end of the school day for students interested
  • Extracurricular activities in schools' learning system
  • Quiz and sports competitions between schools
  • Attending tutorial centres; the centres are all over Nigeria
  • Private tutoring; could be online or in-person
  • Summer coaching at the end of a long term is also a great idea
  • Academic support can also come in form of teachers guiding and counselling their students to build a good relationship with their academics

Counselling gives students the impression that they are not alone, and it boosts students' engagement in class and also their ability to study.

When students are doing well in their academics it helps them meet up with the learning standard set by the school and the government at the national level. This is a form of achievement for both the student and the school as well.

find out how private academic support can reduce the rate of dropouts in Nigeria.

Offering Academic Support to Children in Rural Areas

Academic support services require that you pay for them. However, families in the rural part of the country may find it difficult to pay for all this and may even wave off the idea of getting academic support for their children.

What education does is that it improves the academic and social status of a child which broadens their mindset. Children in rural areas deserve this as well.

The good news is, that there are people from different countries that are willing to offer academic support to children in rural areas.

Both international and national foundations are usually interested in giving support to children in rural areas. They build good relationships with them and give them quality education and resources. These people even go as far as learning their language for countries that don't speak English, just to show support.

They go from one rural area to another rural area in different countries including Nigeria every year to start up an academic support centre. This way people in rural areas with low social status will be able to see education in a new light and embrace the opportunities that come with it.

Academic Support Via Private Tutoring

The purpose for which parents get their children a private tutor either online or in-person is to provide them with higher opportunities to get better in their academics personally and when they get back to class.

The pandemic has helped us see new opportunities that come with online courses and private lessons.

If you're looking for a great tutoring service to improve your kid's academic status, either for primary education, secondary or even university then you should check out Superprof. With Superprof, every student gets access to quality knowledge from experienced tutors.

During the lesson, the private teacher is left with the responsibility of passing academic knowledge to the student, in the language and level that the child will understand. A private tutor needs to be good at the English language since it's the generally acceptable language in Nigeria.

When a student has a private tutor, he or she will have the teacher's full attention. This will help them learn faster since private tutoring creates a safe space for a child or student to ask all their questions to which the tutor will provide answers.

Another great thing about private tutoring is that students can learn at their own pace. This is unlike regular school where teachers think they are carrying along with all the students in their class.

The good thing about private tutoring is that it's not restricted to young children alone, and you can decide the time you want to have it. If your kid is preparing for exams like SSCE, JAMB, and other higher exams, you can enrol them with a private tutor either online or in-person for exam revision.

This will help them use the opportunities that come with it.

Also, university students are not excluded from private tutoring, the aim is to get better academically and become a scholar in their chosen field.
