Abuja is located in the centre of Nigeria, within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and it officially became Nigeria's capital on 12 December 1991, replacing Lagos, though the latter remains the country's most populous city.  Its population as of 2021 is estimated to be 3,464,123.  Abuja is home to the country's Presidential Branch, National Assembly and Supreme Court.

The impressive Aso Rock rises majestically over the city's central government district. The diverse architecture of the city is reflected in notable sites like the National Mosque, the National Christian Centre and the National Stadium. Abuja is to Nigeria as Washington Dc is to the United States of America.
